Parents Cut Off ‘Financial Support’ for Son’s Wedding for This Surprising Reason

A parent says they decided to cut off their “financial support” for their son’s upcoming wedding after discovering something shocking.

In a post on Reddit‘s popular “Am I the A——” forum, the parent shared that their 23-year-old son, who got engaged a few months ago, recently came to them and admitted that he had been texting with a woman he met on Tinder.

“That alone already shocked me… he’s engaged, and that’s obviously not acceptable behavior,” the OP (original poster) wrote.

But as it turns out, there was a major “twist” to the story.

“The girl on Tinder was actually his fiancée. She made a fake account to ‘test’ whether he would stay loyal — and when he flirted back, she confronted him,” the OP revealed.

While the OP acknowledged that what their son did was “messed up,” they were taken aback by their future daughter-in-law’s plot to catch him out.

“Creating a whole fake profile to trap your partner? That’s manipulation. If you have to run sting operations to trust your fiancé, maybe you shouldn’t be getting married,” they pointed out.

The OP said that after learning what their son’s fiancée had been up to, they decided to pull their funding for the wedding.

“I told my son I wouldn’t be paying for the wedding anymore. I don’t want to support a marriage that already starts with lies and games from both sides,” they wrote.

However, some family members have accused the OP of “overreacting and punishing them both.” Seeking other opinions, the OP asked fellow Reddit users to weigh in on the sticky situation.

In the comments, many readers agreed that the couple is clearly not ready for marriage — but not only because of the fiancée’s behavior.

“Sorry, but your son being on a dating website while planning a wedding — while his fiancée was tricking him. That doesn’t sound like a healthy relationship. And honestly, if the girl is smart, she should break it off. As it shows that your son isn’t loyal (again, because of being on a dating app),” one person wrote.

“Unless there is an agreement between them, that they are allowed to date outside of their relationship, this is a big red flag,” they added.

“You do seem to have more anger at the girlfriend than at your son, and that’s an interesting take,” another commenter said. “If she was your daughter and told you she found evidence suggesting her fiancé was on Tinder looking for hook-ups, would you still think so harshly of her?”

That same person argued that the son’s fiancée was right to be concerned about his online habits. “She obviously had a reason to suspect something was going on behind her back, and she was correct. Why is an engaged man on Tinder in the first place?” they asked.

Another reader assured the OP that they’re not an “a——” for withdrawing their financial support for the wedding.

“These people should not be getting married. And while you can’t prevent it, you’re under no obligation to pay for the wedding,” they said. “Also, there’s a difference between withdrawing an offer of a generous gift and ‘punishing’ someone.”
