India‘s much-anticipated five-match T20I series against England is set to get underway on July 1 in Chester-le-Street, with former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim unveiling his preferred playing XI for the opening encounter. While Karim’s selection featured several established T20 stars and a balanced mix of youth and experience, the biggest talking point was the omission of teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The youngster has been one of the most exciting stories in Indian cricket over the past few months. Following a record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign, many expected him to walk straight into India’s starting lineup. However, Karim has opted for a more experienced combination, choosing proven performers at the top of the order instead.

No place for teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi in Saba Karim’s XI

Suryavanshi’s exclusion is certain to spark debate among fans and experts alike. The left-handed batter earned widespread praise during IPL 2026, where he emerged as the tournament’s standout performer. Representing Rajasthan Royals, he amassed an astonishing 776 runs in the season, averaging 48.50 while striking at a breathtaking rate of 237.30.

His fearless approach against both pace and spin played a major role in Rajasthan Royals reaching the playoffs. Those performances also earned him his maiden call-up to the Indian T20I squad for the tours of Ireland and England.

Despite those achievements, Karim appears to believe that the youngster may need a little more time before being handed a place in India’s starting XI. Instead, he has backed a top order featuring Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan—three players known for their aggressive intent and international experience in white-ball cricket.

The decision suggests that Karim values continuity and experience for a challenging away series against England, where conditions can test even the most talented young batters.

Strong middle order and all-round depth

Karim’s chosen lineup includes a powerful middle order led by Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma. Both batters have enjoyed impressive runs in T20 cricket and are expected to play key roles in stabilizing the innings while maintaining a healthy scoring rate.

Shivam Dube has been selected as the primary pace-bowling all-rounder, offering India additional firepower in the lower middle order. Alongside him, Axar Patel provides balance with his left-arm spin and dependable batting abilities.

The combination gives India significant flexibility, allowing the team management to adapt to different match situations without compromising batting depth.

Balanced bowling attack for English conditions

In the bowling department, Karim has opted for a blend of pace and mystery spin. Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna lead the pace attack, while Harshit Rana‘s inclusion adds extra aggression and bounce.

For the spin department, Karim has backed Varun Chakaravarthy, whose variations have troubled batters across formats. The mystery spinner’s ability to take wickets in the middle overs could prove crucial on English surfaces.
