Saina Nehwal studied only till class 12: A look at her journey from classroom to court

Saina Nehwal, born on March 17, 1990, in Hisar, Haryana, didn’t just smash shuttlecocks—she smashed stereotypes too. While many would expect a superstar athlete to have endless trophies and textbooks, Saina’s school story is refreshingly straightforward: She studied only till class 12. But don’t let that fool you; her journey from classrooms to global courts is one packed with grit, focus, and some serious shuttle skills.Nehwal’s schooling kicked off in Hisar at the Campus School, CCS Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), from lower KG to class three. The university clearly thought she was a big deal even back then—they went ahead and named the Saina Nehwal Institute of Agricultural Technology, Training & Education after her. Talk about making an early impression! From shy student to badminton powerhouse in HyderabadWhen her family moved to Hyderabad, Nehwal switched many schools–first to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Vidhyasharam School, then to the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) School in Rajendranagar. Though she was a bit shy in class, she was nothing if not a serious student, keeping her eyes glued to both textbooks and shuttlecocks.Juggling schoolwork with rigorous training at the famous Pullela Gopichand Academy, Nehwal’s discipline was next level. She kept up with classes through to class ten and didn’t let the shuttlecourt madness distract her from studying.Class 12 done and dusted, but the accolades kept rollingFinishing off her schooling at St. Ann’s College for Women, Hyderabad, Saina hung up her school bag and grabbed her racket full-time. But the education world wasn’t done with her yet. In 2016, SRM University in Chennai honoured her with an honorary doctorate, celebrating her as much more than just a sports icon.Mastering the art of balancing books and badmintonWhile most teens struggled with homework and hangouts, Saina was busy managing training sessions and textbooks with equal flair. Training at the Gopichand Academy while acing schoolwork took sheer dedication and a knack for time management worthy of any top student-athlete.A legacy that hits the mark in education and sportsSaina Nehwal’s academic journey might have stopped at class 12, but her sports career soared sky-high. She became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic badminton medal in 2012 and reached the world number two ranking on July 15, 2010. From classrooms in Hisar to global podiums, her story is one of determination, talent, and breaking barriers. The Saina Nehwal Institute of Agricultural Technology, Training & Education at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University stands as a lasting tribute to her unique blend of brains and badminton brilliance.TOI Education is on WhatsApp now.
