NEW DELHI: The 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, have commenced, and India has made an impressive start to its campaign. The Indian contingent, comprising 30 athletes and 19 support staff, has already secured four medals, including two gold and two silver, in the snowboarding event held in Bardonecchia.
On Tuesday, the Indians excelled in the Novice Giant Slalom Final, the only medal event of the day.
Bharti and Sameer showcased their skills and determination, each claiming a gold medal in their respective divisions. Meanwhile, Hem Chand and Harshita Thakur etched their names in the record books by securing silver medals in their respective categories.
The Special Olympics World Winter Games is a prestigious international event that brings together athletes with intellectual disabilities from around the globe. This year’s edition has attracted participants from 102 countries, with approximately 1500 athletes competing across eight sports.
The event aims to promote inclusivity and representation in the sporting world, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talents and abilities.
The games are being held across four venues in Turin and its surrounding areas.
Speed skating and floorball competitions are taking place in Turin itself, while snowshoeing and alpine skiing events are being organized in Sestriere. Bardonecchia is hosting the snowboarding and cross-country skiing events, and Pragelato is the venue for cross-country skiing competitions.
