In 2023, Def Leppard felt it was time to tell their story, in their words. ‘Definitely: The Official Story of Def Leppard’ is a personal account of Def Leppard from their formation all the way up to 2022’s last studio album ‘Diamond Star Halos’. The book was released in 2023 and there were several versions you could buy. By the time I got around to buying it and the only option available to me was the Publisher’s Edition which is strictly the book. There were other options you could’ve purchased as well.

There was the Deluxe Copies which was Editions Numbered 1 to 350. The Deluxe copies are fully bound in black vegan leather, with an inset aluminium plate on the front, printed with a portrait of the band, and the Def Leppard logo blocked on the back. Every Deluxe copy is signed by Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rick Savage, Rick Allen and Vivian Campbell. Presented in a clamshell box, the interior holds the specially pressed 7″ single. The red and black marbled vinyl presents two previously unreleased live recordings: the A-side is ‘Animal’ (performed at the Royal Albert Hall, 2018), and the B-side is ‘Slang’ (recorded in Las Vegas, 2019). A compartment under the book includes five Diamond Star Halos guitar picks in a small cloth bag and three replica tour passes. A large pull-ribbon, printed with the Def Leppard logo, lifts the book.Exclusive to the Deluxe copies is a signed and numbered photographic print of Def Leppard on stage at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, Wembley Stadium, 20 April 1992. Suitable for framing, the print is signed by Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rick Allen, Rick Savage and Vivian Campbell. Completing the Deluxe boxed set, a second recess under the book contains a collectable cassette of the band’s latest studio album, Diamond Star Halos.

The Collector’s Copies were Numbered 351 to 1,500. The Collector copies are 3/4 quarter bound in black vegan leather, with a portrait of the band printed on an aluminium plate front cover and the Def Leppard logo blocked on the back cover. The 296-page book is finished with colour foil blocking on the spine, and red page edging. Every copy in the edition is signed by Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rick Savage, Rick Allen and Vivian Campbell. Presented in a clamshell box covered in a montage of images with an inset Def Leppard logo sticker and tour pass, the interior lid holds a specially pressed 7″ single. A large pull-ribbon, printed with the Def Leppard logo, lifts the book.

Both versions were very nice and very expensive and very sold out. So, the basic book is all I was able to purchase. That taught me not to hesitate next time. The book is told from the perspective of every band member, Joe Elliott, Rick Allen, Rick Savage, Phil Collen, Vivian Campbell and even Steve Clark and Pete Willis. The story was told chronologically and each chapter was a studio album era including the Def Leppard E.P. to kick things off with the band formation and all. There were quotes from all the band members and tons of pictures of the band and items from their archives including backstage passes, posters, articles, concert schedules, concert reviews, album reviews and anything else you can think of associated with the band.

The cover of the album is a beautiful hardback cover with raised lettering for the band logo and on the back cover, there is a actually a slit in the backstage pass. They truly paid attention to detail. There are two forewards in the book. The first is by longtime friend and Queen guitar player, Brian May. The second is by author David Fricke who wrote ‘Animal Instincts’ for the band back in the ‘Hysteria’ era. And the pictures inside are of such vivid quality and color and literally jump from the page. Simply stunning and a real page turner at that.

The stories by the band or personal and honest. The go in to detail about what was going on at the time with the band and discuss the making of the albums, the writing, the touring and anything significant that was happening in their lives such as firing of a member, deaths, losing an arm, cancer, divorces, etc… Some of the stuff I had already heard about, others I didn’t know. All very interesting. I loved hearing about touring and the making of the album the most. I loved how each chapter began with the cover art and how they came up with the cover and packaging like with ‘Pyromania’…

A lot of the photographs and pictures had never been seen before, while some had. The pictures were immense as they literally wrapped around the story and the 62,000 words included in the manuscript. I found myself staring at each page after finishing reading the band members comments so it could take awhile to get through each page if you take your time and take it all in.

What was also great is that they didn’t dwell too much on stuff that had already been written such as Rick’s tragic accident where he lost his arm as they had discussed that in great detail in ‘Animal Instinct’. They did mention it, of course, as it was a critical time in the band’s career. As they were going through each album era, they would even mention any compilations or live albums or even the Taylor Swift CMT concert in the chapter of the appropriate era. They touched on everything from 90’s grunge, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and how they went from playing fairs back to playing stadiums. It was an amazing ride for a band’s amazing career.

I really enjoyed learning more on the stuff after ‘Adrenalize’ and how they calculated out their career. To me, this was a spectacular way to tell their story. The pictures helped tell that story even more and bringing it to life in living color. If you are a Def Leppard fan, this really is a must have to encapsulate a career of one of the greatest bands to have ever come out of the 80’s. They not only had 1 Diamond rated album, but 2 putting them among the elite of the elite of artist. Not many bands can say they have two Diamond albums. Do yourself a favor and get this one. My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Stars as I was never bored, I learned some things I didn’t know and I was entertained from the first page to the last. What more could you want!! Other then maybe that Deluxe Edition set I missed out on…oh well.
