The Philadelphia Eagles Win Super Bowl LIX

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX to earn the franchise its second Lombardi Trophy. Previously, the Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 to win Super Bowl LII in 2018.

This is Philly’s second Super Bowl win in its last three attempts, bringing the franchise’s overall record to 2-3 in the big game. It also serves as revenge for Kansas City’s 38-35 victory in Super Bowl LVII in 2023.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the MVP. He had three total touchdowns and 293 total yards in the game.

Philly’s defense was remarkable. The unit forced three turnovers, recorded a pick-six, and sacked Patrick Mahomes six times.

Facing a 4th and 2 at midfield on the opening drive of the game, Jalen Hurts completed a pass to wide receiver A.J. Brown, but Brown was penalized for offensive pass interference, so Philly ended up punting the ball away.

After a KC punt, Philadelphia’s second drive was extended thanks to a somewhat questionable unnecessary roughness penalty on Chiefs defensive back Trent McDuffie. After a 27-yard pass to wideout Jahan Dotson, the Eagles executed a one-yard tush push to take a 7-0 lead. That marked Dotson’s first catch since the first quarter of the Wild Card Round.

Wide receiver DeVonta Smith made a huge play on a 3rd and 8 to keep another Philadelphia drive alive. Kansas City forced a third down stop, but an offside penalty nullified it, letting the Eagles end the quarter in Chiefs territory ahead 7-0. They wouldn’t capitalize though, as Jalen Hurts threw a pick just plays later, his first INT since Week Ten.

The Chiefs punted again after that. KC started the game 0/3 on third down with three punts.

A 22-yard reception by A.J. Brown allowed the Eagles to kick a 48-yard field goal, putting them up 10-0 with 8:38 to go in the first half.

It was a disastrous start for Patrick Mahomes, who opened the game five for ten with only 24 passing yards. He also threw an interception to Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean. That was returned 38 yards for a touchdown to put Philly ahead 17-0. DeJean is only the second person in NFL history to score a touchdown on his birthday in a title game.

Immediately after a Philadelphia punt, Mahomes was picked off for the second time to set the Eagles up at KC’s 14 yard line. Two plays later, A.J. Brown reached the end zone on a 12-yard crossing route to go ahead 24-0 at the break. Philly’s 24-point halftime lead was the second-largest in Super Bowl history.

KC gave up sacks on back-to-back plays on its first possession of the second half, which led to the Chiefs’ sixth punt of the game. After giving up five sacks in their previous two games, Kansas City had surrendered five sacks in the first 33 minutes of Super Bowl LIX.

In the third quarter, Jalen Hurts started making things happen with his legs. He picked up 30 yards on two runs to make it all the way down to the KC four yard line. The Chiefs put together a goal-line stand, and an Eagles field goal made it 27-0.

On their own side of the field, Kansas City failed to convert a fourth down attempt, allowing Philadelphia to regain possession of the ball on the Chiefs’ 46. One play later, the Eagles went ahead 33-0 thanks to a 46-yard touchdown strike to DeVonta Smith.

KC managed to finally get on the board just before the end of the third quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy. They failed to convert a two-point try so they were only able to cut Philly’s lead to 34-6.

Another 40-yard Eagles drive was capped off with a field goal to extend the lead to 37-6 with under ten minutes left in the game.

Patrick Mahomes’ third turnover of the Super Bowl was a strip-sack-fumble in the fourth quarter, which was recovered by Philly. That was the sixth sack of Mahomes, a career-high for the three-time Super Bowl MVP.

Philly would only gain six yards before Jake Elliott hit his fourth field goal of the game to go ahead 40-6. After missing eight field goals during the regular season, Elliott made every field goal he attempted in the playoffs.

Kansas City scored two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions to end the scoring at 40-22.

With this win, the Eagles prevented the Chiefs from becoming the first NFL franchise to win three straight Super Bowls. This actually marks the second time that Philly has stopped another team from three-peating. Coincidentally, the Eagles’ 2018 win over the Patriots was sandwiched between two New England Super Bowl Championships. Had Philadelphia lost Super Bowl LII, the Patriots would’ve become the first team in the NFL to three-peat following their win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, they finished the campaign with a 17-3 record. KC only lost two games this season that Patrick Mahomes started: the team’s Week 11 matchup with the Buffalo Bills and Super Bowl LIX.
