US student loan crisis: What Gen Z needs to know before signing up
Understanding the US Student Loan Crisis: Essential Insights for Gen Z

For decades, higher education has been sold as the golden ticket to success in the United States but behind the promise of college degrees lies a staggering reality: the US student loan crisis has ballooned into one of the biggest financial burdens of our time. According to the 2024 report by the Federal Reserve, student loan debt has surpassed $1.7 trillion, affecting over 43 million borrowers. For Gen Z, who are the newest generation stepping into college, understanding the risks and realities of student loans is not optional; it is essential.College costs are rising faster than inflation as tuition fees have increased at a pace much higher than family income growth. The 2023 report by National Center for Education Statistics highlights that the average annual tuition at public universities has more than tripled in real terms since the 1980s, which means that Gen Z students are paying significantly more for the same degrees that their parents earned decades ago.Student loan debt does not just affect wallets, it delays life milestones. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs found that high debt levels are directly linked to delays in buying homes, starting families and even pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. For Gen Z, this means that signing up for loans without careful planning could shape not just their finances but their lifestyle for years to come. The student loan crisis is not just about numbers, it is about futures. For Gen Z, making informed choices about borrowing means the difference between a degree that opens doors and a debt burden that shuts them. By understanding rising tuition costs, the long-term impact of debt, degree payoffs and alternatives to traditional college, students can approach higher education with both ambition and caution. In a world where debt can last decades, the smartest move Gen Z can make is to ask tough questions before signing on the dotted line.

Not all degrees pay off the same way

The tough truth is that some degrees do not provide a strong return on investment and this is backed by a 2018 research paper in Education Economics, which claimed that graduates in STEM and healthcare fields see significantly higher earnings compared to those in arts and humanities. Gen Z must weigh not only their passion but also the financial realities of their chosen career path before taking on debt.

Federal vs private loans: Know the difference

    • Federal loans generally offer lower interest rates, income-driven repayment plans and forgiveness programs.
    • Private loans, on the other hand, often come with higher interest and fewer protections.

A 2022 report by Brookings Institution pointed out that the students who rely heavily on private loans are at a greater risk of default. It is therefore advised that Gen Z borrowers should always maximise federal aid options before turning to private lenders.

    Alternatives are emerging

The traditional “four-year degree at any cost” model is being challenged with trade schools, community colleges and online programs offering affordable alternatives that have a strong earning potential. In fact, a 2019 study by Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce revealed that 28% of workers with an associate degree now earn more than the average bachelor’s degree holder. Hence, it is recommended that Gen Z should explore these pathways before automatically opting for loans.
