The opening day of the third Test between West Indies and Australia at Sabina Park was a masterclass in fast bowling, predominantly orchestrated by the sensational Shamar Joseph. His searing pace and incisive movement ripped through the Australian batting order, culminating in a spellbinding dismissal of Beau Webster that will undoubtedly be etched into the highlights reels for years to come.

Shamar Joseph delivers an absolute peach to see-off Beau Webster

The drama began to unfold as the afternoon light softened, casting long shadows across the pitch. Australia, having navigated the initial overs with a degree of comfort, suddenly found themselves grappling for stability as wickets began to tumble. It was at this crucial juncture that Shamar Joseph, brimming with intent and a palpable menace, was unleashed. His run-up was purposeful, his delivery stride powerful, and the ball, when it left his hand, seemed destined for destruction. Facing him was Beau Webster, a batter typically known for his calm demeanour and ability to absorb pressure. However, on this occasion, even Webster’s resolve was no match for Joseph’s exceptional skill.

Joseph delivered what can only be described as a ‘peach’ of a ball. Pitched full, delivered at blistering pace, and subtly jagging away off the seam, it offered just enough temptation for Webster to commit to a defensive stroke. The ball kissed the very outside edge of the bat, flying true and safe into the waiting gloves of wicketkeeper Shai Hope. The West Indies contingent erupted in a cacophony of cheers, Joseph at the epicentre of the celebrations, arms raised aloft in triumph. It was a prized scalp, claimed with a delivery that showcased the young fast bowler’s burgeoning talent and will surely be replayed countless times, a testament to its sheer quality. Webster’s dismissal was a significant blow for the visitors, his brief stay at the crease yielding just one run from nine deliveries, never allowing him to settle against Joseph’s relentless accuracy and aggression. This pivotal wicket left Australia in a precarious position, decisively shifting the balance of power towards the West Indies. Joseph was the undisputed star with the ball, concluding the day with an impressive four-wicket haul. His devastating spell not only accounted for Webster but also saw him claim the crucial wickets of seasoned campaigners like Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith, proving too hot for the Australian batsmen to handle.

West Indies seize control as Australia collapse

The collapse of the Australian innings was comprehensive, a testament to the collective effort and unwavering discipline of the West Indies bowling attack, spearheaded by Joseph. While Joseph inflicted the most significant damage, he was ably supported by his teammates. Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales each chipped in with three wickets apiece, ensuring that Australia never managed to forge any meaningful partnerships or gain a foothold in the innings. The hosts’ energy in the field was infectious, their discipline unwavering, as they capitalized on every half-chance and maintained relentless pressure. Australia’s innings, which had commenced with a glimmer of promise, spectacularly unravelled under the lights. After a relatively solid start, their middle and lower order crumbled against the sustained onslaught from the West Indies’ pace battery. Webster’s dismissal, in particular, served as a stark emblem of Australia’s struggles – a clear inability to cope with the sheer movement, intensity, and raw pace that Joseph, and indeed the entire West Indies attack, brought to the crease.

The visitors ultimately capitulated for a paltry 225 all out, having lost their last seven wickets for a mere 96 runs, leaving the West Indies in a commanding position at the close of play on Day 1.
