Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty endured a disappointing start against England in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Her brief stay at the crease ended in a quick dismissal, leaving the Bangladesh side reeling under early pressure. The wicket was a crucial blow in the top order, as the captain departed without troubling the scorers. This duck came during a challenging phase of their innings after England had chosen to field first. It proved to be a moment of misfortune that hampered Bangladesh’s efforts to build a competitive total.

Women’s World Cup 2025: Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana departs for a duck against England

The Bangladeshi captain, Sultana Joty, was dismissed for a duck during the CWC 2025 match against England, suffering an unfortunate and soft dismissal that compounded the pressure on her side. The key moment occurred in the 6th over of the innings, with the score reading 25/2. Left-arm orthodox spinner Linsey Smith was the bowler who secured the crucial breakthrough.

Smith tossed the ball up with good flight, full and around the off stump, tempting the batter into a drive. Sultana Joty, eager to get off the mark, played the shot early. The ball appeared to ‘hold on the surface’ momentarily before she made contact, resulting in a chipped shot off the toe-end of the bat. The ball soared gently towards the short cover position where fielder Charlie Dean anticipated the movement. Dean made an excellent effort, diving low to her right to complete a fine, sharp catch. The captain’s departure for 0 run off 2 balls was a massive setback, leaving the highly-rated batter stunned and in disbelief as she walked back, giving England an early advantage.

Bangladesh, having been put in to bat by England, have had a hard-fought start in the 8th match of the CWC 2025 in Guwahati, reaching 106/4 in 32 overs. The innings began on a difficult note, with openers Rubya Haider (4) and captain Sultana (0) falling quickly to pacewoman Lauren Bell and spinner Smith respectively, leaving the team struggling at 25/2 inside the first six overs. Sharmin Akhter (30) then provided stability, forming a crucial 34-run partnership with Sobhana Mostary before being caught behind off Sophie Ecclestone.

The fall of Shorna Akter (10) to Charlie Dean further hampered the scoring rate, which currently sits at a modest 3.31. However, the current unbeaten fifth-wicket pair of Sobhana Mostary (46 not out) and Ritu Moni (29 not out) has shown resilience, batting together for over nine overs to ensure no further collapses, with Mostary anchoring the innings in search of a competitive total on a challenging pitch. The last five overs saw a slow but steady accumulation of 17 runs without loss, suggesting the batters are prioritising wickets as they look to accelerate in the second half of the innings.
