a family having dinner in el tomate perfecto

After watching The Perfect Tomato, I realized something. While I always write in English because it’s the language I mostly feel comfortable writing in, there are some things that simply can’t be translated. No matter what you try, the message sometimes doesn’t arrive unless you use the proper medium. It’s the reason why I will switch to Spanish. The Perfect Tomato was good and compelling enough to convince me that this is the best way to address the heartwarming nature of the film.

    English version

El Tomate Perfecto shows us Nacho, a grandfather who knows exactly how to harvest a good tomato. Nacho spends his days teaching his granddaughter everything you need to know to make a perfect tomato. She probably won’t be doing this someday, but her grandfather understands that his legacy is this exact moment.

Nacho is entering a stage in his life where reality is an uncomfortable subject. A permanent cough is not uncomfortable enough to make him understand that maybe it’s time to rest. But “rest”? Nacho is a working man with Latino roots, and rest is a utopia that never becomes reality. That’s why when his daughter offers (or communicates) an alternative, Nacho’s reaction is one of absolute intransigence. His legacy is unique. And it is the only thing he has to offer to those who will follow him.

Written and directed by Cristobal Abugaber, El Tomate Perfecto perfectly encompasses something that transcends language barriers and traditions. We are born for a purpose and Nacho found it in something that is insignificant to others. The film comes to a beautiful conclusion in which Nacho represents reality for his family and for many viewers. Life is not about achieved dreams or magical coincidences. Reality is more tangible. Nacho doesn’t want to teach his daughter and granddaughter about how hard the journey is. He just lets them face any obstacle on their own.

Many would think that Nacho’s attitude is self-centered. That a person who has already lived through everything should not represent the obstacle of others. But Nacho does not intend to change the world with his firm decision to stay in his place, even though this may interrupt the natural path of his descendants. In the conflict, the stories of millions of people with a strong attachment to the past, their culture and identity becomes visible.

Abugaber seeks authenticity and achieves it. El Tomate Perfecto is a quick and very well structured glimpse that does not allow us to ask many questions about what happened before and what comes after. Nacho, played by Eligio Melendez, achieves an unfiltered portrayal of a reality of Latino culture. The working man who knows no other reality than to contribute to a future that is not written. The worker whose legacy is not in opulence but in experience. An experience that allows him to harvest something perfect and that regenerates itself. And no, it is not just a tomato.
