Team India veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami registered an unwanted record during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against arch-rivals Pakistan. Mohammed Shami became the third Indian cricketer to bowl an 11-ball over in One Day Internationals, equaling the record of former pacer Zaheer Khan.

Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Sunday, February 23. Shami was given the new ball but failed to find his rhythm. The Indian pacer bowled five wides in the opening over of the innings against Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam.

Mohammed Shami Registers Unwanted Record in Pakistan Clash

Mohammed Shami joined an unwanted list of Indian bowlers by delivering an 11-ball over against Pakistan. He became the third Indian to achieve this unwanted record in ODIs, following Zaheer Khan (2003) and Irfan Pathan (2006). Notably, Zaheer Khan also bowled 10-ball overs on six different occasions.

Longest over by an Indian in an ODI

Mohammed Shami – 11 balls vs Pakistan, Dubai (2025)

Irfan Pathan – 11 balls vs West Indies, Kingston (2006)

Zaheer Khan – 11 balls vs Australia, Wankhede (2003)

Mohammed Shami Breaks Jasprit Bumrah’s Record From 2017 Final

Mohammed Shami’s 11-ball over became the longest by an Indian in the Champions Trophy history, surpassing Jasprit Bumrah’s nine-ball over in the 2017 final against the same opposition. It also ranks as the second-longest over ever bowled in the Champions Trophy.

Overall, Shami’s over is the third-longest in the tournament’s history. The record for the longest overs belongs to Bangladesh’s Hasibul Hossain and Zimbabwe’s Tinashe Panyangara, both of whom bowled 13-ball overs in the past.

Shami’s over did not set the record for the most wides in a single over in ODI history. That unwanted record belongs to Pakistan’s Mohammad Sami, who bowled a 17-ball over in an Asia Cup match against Bangladesh in 2004, conceding 22 runs with seven wides and four no-balls.

In domestic cricket, Bert Vance holds the record for the longest over, having bowled a staggering 22-ball over in 1990, conceding 77 runs—the most ever in a single over in the history of the game.

India Stick to Unchanged XI for Crucial Champions Trophy Clash

India went with an unchanged playing XI for their crucial Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan, sticking to the same lineup that secured a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in their opening match. The team, led by Rohit Sharma, entered the contest with momentum on their side.

Pakistan, on the other hand, made a change after their 60-run defeat to New Zealand. Imam-ul-Haq was brought in as an opener, replacing Fakhar Zaman, who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury.

Pakistan lost openers Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq in the first 10 overs. At the moment, Pakistan are at 61/2 in 14 overs with Saud Shakeel (8) and Mohammad Rizwan (7) at the crease. The Men in Green need to win the match to be in the race for the semi-finals.
