CBSE Class 12 Biology exam 2026: Expert tips and high-probability questions you must practice
    CBSE Class 12 Biology exam

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the Class 12th Biology exam 2026 on March 27, 2026, Friday. It is considered to be a crucial subject for the Science stream students. Excelling in Biology can open a plethora of opportunities in lucrative domains. Students must be in there last leg of preparation for the exam. Some expert tips during this period can prove to be highly beneficial for the students. Ms. Niyati, Biology Educator and Guest Resource Person at the State Council of Educational Research and Training interacted exclusively with the Times of India to advise students for the upcoming exam. She emphasises that for Biology, “understanding concepts is more important than rote learning; this exam rewards analytical clarity and precise expression.”

    Understanding the exam pattern

The CBSE Class XII Biology paper for 2025-26 comprises 33 compulsory questions divided across five sections, totaling 70 marks. Students will find that some questions offer an internal choice, but they are expected to attempt every section. Ms. Niyati emphasizes, “Time management is crucial. Allocate 15–20 minutes for revision and ensure diagrams are practiced well in advance.”

    Section-wise high-weightage topics & focus areas

Ms.Niyati has highlighted the high-weightage topics and focus areas for the exam:Section A – Conceptual Basics (16 marks)Focus Areas: Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants, Human Reproduction, Molecular Basis of Inheritance, Evolution, Human Health & Disease, Biotechnology, Ecology.High-probability questions: Assertion–Reason or MCQs often target understanding, not memorization.Section B – Very Short Answer (10 marks)Focus Areas: Artificial hybridization, transcription regulation, immunity, ecological pyramids, rDNA technology basics.Tip: Answer 3–4 precise points, and a neat mini-diagram can elevate marks.Section C – Short Answer (21 marks)Focus Areas: Population pyramids, BOD process, ELISA, evolutionary concepts, genetics numericals, diagram interpretation.High-probability questions: Mendelian cross calculations, evolutionary evidences, structured explanations with examples.Section D – Case-Based (8 marks)Focus Areas: Fruit formation cases, immunity graphs, ecological data interpretation.Strategy: Spend the first 15 minutes carefully analyzing cases; answer sub-parts sequentially.Section E – Long Answer (15 marks)Focus Areas: Transcription & translation, rDNA technology, ecological interactions, biodiversity, restriction enzymes.Tip: Combine structured content with labeled diagrams; high-order thinking is tested extensively.

    Smart tips for scoring 70/70

Master NCERT Line by Line: Most MCQs and assertion questions are directly derived from textbook statements. Pay attention to boxed and highlighted information.Practice Genetics Numericals: Comfort with Punnett squares, independent assortment, and the Hardy-Weinberg principle is essential.Draw Neat, Labeled Diagrams: Transcription units, reproductive cycles, ecological pyramids, and rDNA processes should be practiced repeatedly.Thoroughly Prepare Biotechnology: Understand restriction enzymes, plasmid vectors, transformations, ELISA, and their applications in agriculture and medicine.Focus on Graphs & Case Studies: Population pyramids, immunity charts, and ecological data must be interpreted logically; always explain the “why.”Strengthen Assertion–Reason Logic: Verify the truth of both statements and whether the reason actually explains the assertion.Final Exam Strategy: Revise diagrams daily, solve the last 10 years’ board papers, practice under timed conditions, and summarize processes in flowchart form.

    High-probability questions by unit

Ms. Niyati advises, “Prepare a one-page summary of high-weightage topics, with diagrams where necessary. Practice CBSE board papers for at least the last three years under timed conditions. Diagrams and flowcharts can make a significant difference.”Unit 1: Reproduction

    • Explain spermatogenesis and oogenesis with diagrams.
    • Double fertilization in angiosperms.
    • Hormonal regulation of menstrual cycle.
    • STDs: Symptoms, prevention, and reproductive health programmes.

    Unit 2: Genetics & Evolution

    • Mendel’s laws with Punnett squares.
    • DNA replication (Meselson & Stahl experiment).
    • Lac Operon model.
    • Genetic drift, sex determination in humans, evolutionary evidences.

Unit 3: Biology & Human Welfare

    • Structure and function of antibodies.
    • Active vs passive immunity, herd immunity.
    • Biofertilizers, microbes in industry, and disease mechanisms.

    Unit 4: Biotechnology

    • Steps of recombinant DNA technology.
    • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and applications.
    • GM crops and ethical issues.

    Unit 5: Ecology & Environment

    • Energy flow (10% law), ecological pyramids.
    • Biodiversity conservation (in-situ vs ex-situ).
    • Global warming, ozone depletion, and India’s biodiversity hotspots.

CBSE Biology exam 2026: High-probability CBSE questions (based on PYQs analysis)

Candidates can check the list of high probability CBSE questions based on the previous year analysis done by Ms. Niyati:Q1. Explain the mechanism of DNA replication in prokaryotes.Q2: State and explain Mendel’s Law of Independent Assortment with a Punnett square.Q3: Explain the Lac Operon in E. coli.Q4: Describe the hormonal control of the human menstrual cycle.Q5: Explain the steps of recombinant DNA technology.Q6: What is Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)? Describe its steps & applications.Q7: Explain the 10% law of energy transfer in an ecosystem.Q8: Define STDs. Mention two symptoms, and prevention methods.Q9: (a) Name the infective stage of Plasmodium which Anopheles mosquito takes in along with the blood from an infected human. (b) Why does the infection cause fever in humans? (c) Give a flow chart of the part of the lifecycle of this parasite passed in the insectQ10. (a) Name the source from which insulin was extracted earlier. Why is this insulin no more used by diabetic people? (b) Explain the process of synthesis of insulin by Eli Lilly company. Name the techniques used by the company. (c) How is the insulin produced by the human body different from the insulin produced by the above-mentioned company?

    Golden tip by the expert

Ms. Niyati offered a golden tip for strategic preparation. She recommends creating a one-page summary of high-weightage topics, including key points and diagrams wherever necessary, as a quick-reference tool for last-minute revision. “Write down the key enzymes, their steps, and functions clearly,” she advises, “because these often form the backbone of scoring questions.” She further suggests that students practice the last three years’ CBSE board papers along with the latest 2025-26 sample question paper. According to her, “Familiarity with patterns and question types builds both confidence and speed. And while solving diagram-based questions, always time yourself; practicing under timed conditions ensures clarity, accuracy, and a neat presentation during the actual exam.”Final wordCBSE Class XII Biology exam is not only about memorising content; it is also about reaching the depth of the subject and understanding it. The exam will test the ability of students to connect concepts with applications. With focused preparation, students will be able to master the NCERT content and the skill of strategic time management.
