Two types of trade options for the Dallas Stars with Jason Robertson

Robert Tiffin on Stars Thoughts: The Dallas Stars obviously need to create salary cap space to re-sign pending RFA Jason Robertson. They’d like to re-sign Robertson. If they feel they can’t sign Robertson to a big deal, they may need to look at trading him.

One option with Robertson would be to trade him for a similar, established player – Ie, a Brady Tkachuk, Dylan Larkin, William Nylander, or Robert Thomas. They may not even be available, and if they are, those teams would likely want the Stars to sweeten the pot.

A second trade option would be similar to the Mikko Rantanen trade, a young player with upside and draft picks. Riskier for the Stars since they are in a win-now mode. Someone like a Matthew Knies or Mason McTavish wouldn’t give the Stars what Robertson gives them.

NHL Rumors: Kings, Oilers, Jets, Devils, Blues, Panthers, Stars, and Flames

To re-sign him, they’ll need to move out some salary. They’ll likely need to move out salary regardless.

Top forward trade options that the Minnesota Wild could explore

Michael Russo and Joe Smith of The Athletic: Trade assets include Jesper Wallstedt, Danila Yurov, Bobby Brink, Daemon Hunt, Charlie Stramel, Hunter Haight, Riley Heidt, Adam Benak, and future first-round picks.

Ryan Hartman, Joel Eriksson Ek and Jared Spurgeon have 10-team no-trade clauses. Marcus Foligno and Jake Middleton have 15-team no-trade clauses that convert to no-moves on July 1st. Jonas Brodin, Nico Sturm and Yakov Trenin don’t have protection.

It’s not easy to acquire top-six centers or wingers. They aren’t offering up Brock Faber, Matt Boldy or Kirill Kaprizov. Who should the Wild at least call?

Auston Matthews (Maple Leafs) – If the Leafs asked for Jesper Wallstedt, he seems like he could handle that market.

Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier (Devils) – Reunite the Hughes brothers in Minnesota and not New Jersey. Sources say the Wild tried to acquire Luke Hughes last season. New Devils GM Sunny Mehta is unlikely to trade Jack. Hischier is extension eligible, and if they get the sense he won’t extend, maybe they test the trade market.

Dylan Larkin (Red Wings) – Five years left at $8.7 million. He’ll be 30 years old by the start of next season. Would he waive his no-trade if he’s looking for a change of scenery?

Robert Thomas (Blues) – The Blues turned down a trade package of Wallstedt and Yurov at the deadline. Five years left at $8.125 million.

Brady Tkachuk (Senators) – A winger and not a center, but can drive the play. Two years left at $8.2 million.

NHL Rumors: Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, and the Florida Panthers

Vincent Trocheck (Rangers) – Sources say the deadline asking price was steep. Has three years left at $5.625 million. The Wild likely wouldn’t give up Wallstedt for him.
