Optimism and hope for a bright future surround the Vancouver Canucks. During the Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin era of the Canucks, there was more chaos than creation. While the Canucks made it to the second round of the playoffs in 2024, the following season saw dysfunction between Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller.

Despite those locker-room issues, both players received eight-year contract extensions. Even though management knew about these issues for multiple seasons, they believed the players could figure it out. The players never could, which led to Miller being traded to the New York Rangers.

What is Going on with Jim Rutherford and the Vancouver Canucks?

Soon after, star defenseman Quinn Hughes told Rutherford that he wanted out of Vancouver and wanted to go play with his brothers in New Jersey. Rutherford made it public and set the hockey world ablaze during the summer of 2025.

Quinn Hughes was soon traded to the Minnesota Wild for a package that included Zeev Buium, who just signed an eight-year extension, Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, and a first-round pick. What made matters worse was that it was known that Rutherford was going to be retiring, and he continued to send the Vancouver Canucks into a tailspin. In addition to Quinn Hughes, Vancouver traded Conor Garland at the deadline.

The chaos Rutherford brought to the team with players constantly in trade rumors year after year had to come to an end. That is no way to run a hockey team. So ownership decided it was time to move on not only from Rutherford, but also from GM Patrik Allvin. Allvin was given a choice to come back in a lesser role if he wanted. Again, more chaos and drama for an organization that didn’t need it.

What is Going on with Jim Rutherford and the Vancouver Canucks?

So the Vancouver Canucks took a page out of the Toronto Maple Leafs playbook, hiring Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin and making Ryan Johnson the team’s GM. It was the perfect pairing to restore faith in the organization. These guys are showing a plan of attack focused on the team’s future instead of trying to rejig the pieces every year.

If players don’t want to be in Vancouver, they will trade them, as we saw with Nils Hoglander and Marcus Pettersson. It is about getting back to the basics and understanding that a rebuild and being a good organization for the long-term, and not trying to hot-shot results, will take time. Ownership is buying into the plan, and that is what matters most.

Why are the Montreal Canadiens so successful? Their owner, Geoff Molson, bought into a rebuild plan. Fans in Vancouver have been calling for it for years. If you saw the end of the season, the building was full and excited to see what these young players can do.

The Vancouver Canucks Have To Rebuild The Right Way

The Vancouver Canucks have bought into the rebuild and know the playoffs are a few years away, and that’s just fine because there is a method to the madness now.

“I mean, hopefully they got the decision-making process right with the management group this time. You get the Sedins (Henrik and Daniel) coming in there. You have Ryan Johnson coming in because, let’s be honest, Jim Rutherford and Patrick Allvin- well, mostly Jim Rutherford wanted to turn that roster over before the season even started, or you had four or five games in, and they were trying to change the roster and change the puzzle pieces,” as mentioned on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio in July.

“It seemed like every season somebody’s name was coming out of Vancouver. So hopefully that’s changed. I know Jake DeBrusk is a name that’s still out there, and Brock Boeser potentially, and Elias Pettersson. But this thing’s going to the studs, and I think that’s the best thing for the Vancouver Canucks because it looks like they finally have a plan that they want to do something instead of putting makeshift pieces together and hoping to make the playoffs.”

That was the problem in the Rutherford era of the Canucks, and even previous administrations thought and told the owner it was a retool, not a rebuild. We have to turn this around quickly. But the pieces were never in place. That is why the Vancouver Canucks got the label New York Rangers West.

Do the Vancouver Canucks Have Pieces Teams Want?

The Rangers, like the Canucks, tried to hot-shot results and turn things around quickly instead of rebuilding properly. That never ends well, and it didn’t for either team. Neither team had a plan, and it led to poor decision-making, drafting, and development. But Vancouver has more hope than New York.

The Canucks hired Manny Malhotra and are laying the right mindset for the players coming up in the system and on the roster right now. With the leadership group, like Brock Boeser, Filip Hronek, and Elias Pettersson, buying into the plan, this is setting the tone for the season. Again, for the Vancouver Canucks, it’s following what the Calgary Flames did and getting those draft picks to build for the future, not the here and now.

The Vancouver Canucks needed to reset everything, move on from the previous administration, and get things right because that’s what Vancouver really needed. There was just too much up and down over the last couple of seasons. Now the ship is on course, guided by the right light and leadership at the helm, steering it to its ultimate goal.
