People of different generations are using ChatGPT in distinct ways, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Speaking at Sequoia Capital’s AI Ascent 2025 event on May 13, Altman explained that Baby Boomers usually ask ChatGPT straightforward questions and use it much like they would Google.

Millennials, on the other hand, tend to use ChatGPT more personally. Many in their 20s and 30s treat it like a digital guide by asking for advice on daily problems or bigger life choices.

Meanwhile, Altman described younger users, especially college students, who use ChatGPT as an all-in-one assistant. They connect it to documents, prepare complex prompts, and use it regularly for schoolwork, creative ideas, or even decisions about their personal lives.

The OpenAI CEO said that some of this shift is due to a feature called memory, which allows ChatGPT to remember past chats and details about the user.

He compared these habits to what happened when smartphones first came out. Younger people were quick to adapt and make full use of the features, while older generations took longer to get comfortable with the technology.

Altman also noted that the usefulness of artificial intelligence (AI) will rely on three areas, including improving the systems behind the models, making the models themselves more capable, and finding better ways to fit AI into daily life.
