Marnus Labuschagne finds himself under increasing pressure ahead of Australia’s second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay, with former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie warning that another low-scoring performance could put his place in the team at serious risk.
Marnus Labuschagne’s lean run continues
Labuschagne endured another difficult outing in the opening Test in Darwin, managing just 1 and 31 as Australia suffered a surprising defeat against Bangladesh. While his second-innings knock showed some signs of improvement, it did little to ease concerns surrounding his prolonged struggle for consistency. The Australian batter has now gone 42 Test innings without scoring a century, with his most recent hundred coming in July 2023. During that period, he has averaged only 25.32 and registered nine half-centuries. For a player who was once regarded as one of Australia’s most dependable Test batters, the numbers underline just how challenging his recent run has been.
Jason Gillespie highlights Labuschagne’s technical problems
Gillespie believes Labuschagne’s biggest concern is not necessarily a lack of ability but the manner in which he continues to get dismissed. The former Australia fast bowler pointed out that Labuschagne has repeatedly fallen while attempting to play deliveries outside the off stump. According to Gillespie, Labuschagne has developed a worrying tendency to nick the ball behind the wicket, particularly when he commits himself to deliveries he could potentially leave alone. The former pacer stressed that the upcoming Test in Mackay could therefore become a decisive opportunity for the 31-year-old to turn his fortunes around.
“He looked okay in Darwin in the second innings for his 31 runs. But he’s just finding ways to get out. He finds himself nicking the ball behind the wicket quite regularly and gets out caught playing at balls outside the off stump. He needs to score runs in Mackay, else his spot will definitely be in jeopardy,” Gillespie said as quoted by Indian Express.

Young contenders waiting in the wings
Labuschagne’s situation is made more complicated by the emergence of several younger batters who could eventually be considered for a place in Australia’s Test setup. Gillespie specifically mentioned Ollie Peake, Jayden Goodwin, Campbell Kellaway and Sam Konstas as players who could enter the selection conversation if Labuschagne fails to produce a substantial contribution in Mackay.
The former pacer acknowledged that Australia may not have an obvious replacement lined up immediately, but believes the growing pool of young talent gives the selectors options.
“There are several players waiting in the wings. There’s young lad Ollie Peake, Jayden Goodwin from Western Australia, Campbell Kellaway, and Sam Konstas. These players will all be seen as potential options going forward. If Marnus fails, I don’t know who they’re going to pick. But they’re all up-and-coming young players,” added Gillespie.
The second Test, beginning on August 23, could therefore carry considerable significance for Labuschagne. Australia will be desperate to respond after their unexpected defeat in Darwin, while the batter himself has a more personal objective: rediscovering the form that once made him central to the team’s Test plans. With his place no longer looking completely secure, a substantial score in Mackay could provide Labuschagne with the response he needs—and potentially silence growing questions over his future.
