CBSE Class 12 English exam 2026: Faculty-recommended tips to revise and score better
CBSE Class 12 English exam 2026

The CBSE Class 12 board exams are almost here, and for many students, English is the subject where you can really show your skills. The Class 12 English Core exam is scheduled for March 12, 2026. So, the next few weeks will be very important for a smart preparation and revision.Unlike other subjects, English is not only about the knowledge that you have. The skills that are tested are the clarity in the expression and explanation of your ideas. The exam demands clarity of thought, comprehension and well, organized answers. You need to read passages carefully, practise different writing formats, and revise all your literature from Flamingo and Vistas. Doing well in this paper can improve your overall board score and open doors to future fields like humanities, media, and communication. Faculty members from CBSE schools say students who practise regularly, understand the texts properly, and manage time well are usually more confident on exam day.

Key topics to revised in CBSE Class 12 English Core syllabus

The English Core paper has three main sections: Reading, Writing, and Literature, and each deserves your attention.

    Reading Section

Consider this your opportunity to demonstrate your depth of understanding of the text. Working on unseen passages and note, making exercises can really change the game. Focus on the main ideas, the passage’s tone, inferences, and difficult vocabulary. Ms. Ritu Sharma, HOD English, ITL Public School, says, “Strengthen comprehension by practising passages from different topics. Speed, accuracy, and understanding the meaning are key to scoring well.” So, don’t just read—think about what the passage is really saying.

    Writing Section

Writing doesn’t have to be intimidating. Whether it’s letters, notices, reports, articles, or speeches, focus on being clear and organized rather than using long or fancy words. Priyanka Sikri, PGT English, K-IIT World School, Delhi, explains, “Write regularly — from sample papers, previous year questions, and unseen passages. Each response improves your writing and analytical skills.” A little daily practice can make your answers flow naturally on exam day.

    Literature Section

When it comes to literature, don’t just memorise the stories—understand them. Go through each prose and poem, pay attention to themes, characters, symbols, and tone. Jot down key quotes and lessons for quick revision. Aastha Sharma, PGT English, Mayoor School, Noida, advises, “Don’t just retell the story. Analyse the characters and themes, and support your answers with one or two textual references.” Remember, the exam is looking for your insight, not a summary.

CBSE Class 12 English Core exam tips: Practice with purpose

Many students practice without a clear plan, which wastes time. Experts suggest following the syllabus closely and trying mock papers under exam conditions to improve speed and confidence. Sikri recommends, “Practice under exam-like conditions to improve time management. Check your answers carefully, learn from mistakes, and improve your writing.”

Score high in CBSE Class 12 English Core: Plan and structure answers

Good organisation is as important as content. Plan your answers with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Using mind maps or short notes can help you structure answers faster.Sharma (Mayoor School) says, “Plan your answers before writing. A good answer is short, clear, and supported by examples from the text.”

CBSE Class 12 English exam: Presentation matters

A well-structured answer and neat handwriting can make a big difference in how the evaluator sees your work. Even if your content is good, presenting it clearly can turn an average answer into a high-scoring one. Satyendra Kumar Verma, English Language teacher at Sunbeam School, Ballia, advises, “Good presentation and clear expression can make your answers stand out and help you score better.”

Common mistakes to avoid in CBSE Class 12 English Core

Experts point out common errors that cost marks. Sharma (ITL Public School) warns: “Avoid answers that are too short or don’t use textual examples. Don’t exceed word limits, ignore grammar, or write unorganized paragraphs. Focus on analysing the text, not just retelling the story.”Other mistakes include memorising answers instead of understanding them, skipping timed practice, and ignoring vocabulary or writing formats.

Final preparation tips for CBSE English Core 2026

Teachers emphasize that there is no other way than regular practice and revision to achieve success. Revise writing formats, vocabulary, authors, themes, and important quotes. Attempt sample papers within the allotted time and verify your answers. Sikri sums it up: “Excellence in English is not achieved overnight. It comes from regular practice, careful reading, and clear writing.”
