New Zealand is looking to bounce back in the second Test against England after suffering a 115-run defeat in the series opener at Lord’s. The Black Caps struggled to match England in key moments of the match and now face a must-win situation heading into the contest at The Oval, which begins on June 17.

Following the opening Test, New Zealand’s players were given a short break before regrouping in London for preparations ahead of the second match. However, one player’s whereabouts became a major talking point after he departed the United Kingdom during the break, raising questions about his availability for the crucial encounter.

With the series hanging in the balance, New Zealand supporters have been eager to know whether one of their most experienced batters will be available for selection after making a lengthy trip back home between Tests.

Devon Conway heads home after Lord’s Test

Despite returning to New Zealand after the Lord’s Test, Devon Conway is expected to be available for selection at The Oval. The opener travelled home to Wellington to be with his wife, Kim Conway, as the couple welcomed their second child. New Zealand Cricket confirmed that Conway would spend some time with his family before flying back to England ahead of the second Test.

While the journey involves a round trip of more than 23,000 miles, the team remains confident that the batter will rejoin the squad in time for training and match preparations. Conway featured in both innings of the first Test, scoring 1 and 41 as New Zealand fell to defeat. Although he was unable to produce a substantial contribution at Lord’s, he remains a key member of the Black Caps batting unit and is expected to retain his place in the playing XI.

Apart from Conway’s expected return, New Zealand are also hopeful of having a fully fit bowling attack available for the second Test. Fast bowler Matt Henry battled back spasms during the opening match, restricting his involvement across the four days. Captain Tom Latham revealed after the Lord’s defeat that Henry’s recovery would be monitored on a day-to-day basis, but expressed optimism that the extra gap between matches would allow the pacer enough time to regain full fitness.

The Black Caps are scheduled to resume training at The Oval later this week before finalising their plans for the second Test. With Conway expected back in England and Henry continuing his recovery, New Zealand will be hoping to field their strongest possible XI as they attempt to level the series against England.
