Ekta Kapoor issues clarification on BANNED OTT platforms over 'obscene content'; claims she stepped down: 'Not associated in any capacity'

Producer Ekta Kapoor has come down heavily on reports alleging that her OTT platform, ALTT has been banned by the Indian government for streaming ‘obscene and vulgar content’. In a statement issued on her production house’s official handle, Kapoor issued a public clarification and distanced herself and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, from the company currently in the headlines. In an official statement shared with the caption, ‘To whomsoever it may concern’, Kapoor distanced herself from the controversy and asserted that she and her mother had stepped down from the platform back in 2021 and was ‘‘not associated in any capacity’.

    Ekta Kapoor’s Statement

The statement read, ” Following the recent amalgamation of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. (previously its wholly owned subsidiary), duly approved by the Hon’ble NCLT, it now operates ALTT with effect from June 20, 2025.”The statement went on to add, “Media reports have been in circulation about ALTT being disabled by the authorities. However, contrary to such reports, Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT, and they had stepped down from their association way back in June 2021. Any insinuation contrary to the above facts is strongly denied, and the media is requested to report accurate facts.”“Balaji Telefilms Limited is fully compliant with all applicable laws and continues to operate its business with the highest standards of corporate governance,”The statement concluded.

    Government Crackdown on OTT Platforms

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, acting on reports of obscene and pornographic content being streamed online, reportedly blocked a total of 25 apps of OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix, Boomex, and MoodX, among others. Reports on Friday stated that officials claimed many of the platforms featured material containing sexually explicit acts and nudity, which were described as pornographic in nature. Reports also noted that the content lacked meaningful narratives and was largely driven by obscene and vulgar imagery.Authorities further raised concerns over the inappropriate depiction of nudity and sexual content, deeming such portrayals highly objectionable. Officials reportedly cited multiple violations of Indian laws, including the IT Act, in the content disseminated by these platforms.
