Since launching our first Professional Certificates, one of Coursera’s goals has been to make high-quality education more accessible by helping learners build job-ready skills while creating flexible pathways to a degree.

Today I’m excited to share new insights from our partnership with the American Council on Education (ACE) that shows career-focused learning on Coursera has generated nearly $60 million in modeled potential tuition savings by helping learners apply eligible learning toward college credit.

For many adult learners, the biggest barrier to earning a degree isn’t motivation—it’s cost. For decades, ACE’s credit recommendation program has helped learners receive recognition for college-level learning acquired outside traditional classrooms, making it easier to apply prior learning toward a degree.

Research from the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) shows that learners who receive credit for prior learning are significantly more likely to complete a credential, underscoring the value of connecting learning from a variety of settings with higher education.

Coursera and ACE: New learner milestones
Coursera offers more than 50 ACE credit-recommended Professional Certificates and Specializations from leading industry partners including Google, IBM, Microsoft, Meta, and others, spanning high-demand fields such as cybersecurity, data science, IT support, and project management. New insights from ACE demonstrate growing demand for these pathways on Coursera that connect career-focused learning with higher education:

    • Nearly $60 million in modeled potential tuition savings for learners pursuing academic credit.*
    • More than 1 million digital badges (certificates of completion) earned across ACE credit-recommended programs since 2019.
    • More than 85,000 transcripts shared by learners in pursuit of employment and educational opportunities over the last seven years.
    • 36% growth in transcript submissions since 2025, signaling increased learner interest in converting workforce learning into college credit.

We’re seeing this momentum across programs from partners including Google, IBM, and others. Google Career Certificates account for the majority of badge earners and transcript submissions across Coursera’s ACE portfolio, demonstrating the scale at which career-focused learning can support academic pathways. Learners are also using programs from partners such as IBM to pursue academic credit, reflecting growing interest in applying industry-recognized learning toward degree pathways.

“What stands out from this data and the conversations I’ve had with many learners is just how often people are interested in leveraging these credentials for college credit. It turns out, learners were never choosing between practical career skills and a degree. So we’ve built our programs to be rigorous enough to count for both.”

    — Antonio Cangiano, Director, IBM Skills Network

“This data demonstrates the real value of connecting high-quality, job-relevant learning to college credit and degree pathways. When learners can receive recognition for learning they have already completed, we can reduce unnecessary repetition, lower the potential cost of a degree, and create more accessible pathways to continued education. Nearly $60 million in potential tuition savings illustrates what is possible when quality learning, academic recognition, and learner mobility come together. We’re proud of our work with Coursera to help make those connections possible for learners.”

    – Michele Spires, Assistant Vice President of One Dupont Ventures, National Service and Defense Solutions

Together, these trends suggest that learners increasingly view career-focused credentials not as an endpoint, but as part of a broader educational journey.

Creating more flexible pathways to degrees
As more learners turn to micro-credentials and Professional Certificates to build in-demand skills, they’re also looking for ways to apply that learning toward a degree. ACE credit recommendations help connect learning acquired outside the traditional classroom with higher education, giving learners more flexible pathways to build skills, earn academic recognition, and reduce the cost of completing a credential.

While this report focuses on ACE credit recommendations in the United States, we’re also expanding similar learner pathways globally through frameworks such as ECTS in Europe and NSQF in India, helping more learners translate their achievements into recognized academic progress.

As education and work continue to evolve, we see significant opportunities for institutions, industry partners, and learning providers to expand these pathways and help more learners gain valuable skills today while keeping educational opportunities within reach for tomorrow.

*Modeled potential tuition savings are based on ACE’s analysis of transcript activity, estimated credit acceptance rates, recommended credits, and average in-state tuition costs at U.S. public four-year institutions.
