Ilkay Gundogan is set to extend his stay at Manchester City for another season, as his boss, Pep Guardiola, hinted. The former German international returned to Etihad last summer after spending one season at Barcelona.
Guardiola Confident on Gundogan Extension at Man City
The 34-year-old might not be having a great season with City, but that doesn’t seem to jeopardize his future at Etihad. Although he hasn’t been able to replicate his best form with the Citizens, Gundogan remains a key player for Guardiola.
The Spanish tactician believes that his team will still need the contribution of the former Borussia Dortmund star next season. For that reason, it looks like the 34-year-old midfielder will trigger his automatic extension and remain at the club until at least next season.
Confirmation regarding Gundogan’s potential stay at Etihad was revealed by Guardiola during his latest interview with the media.
‘I think so, ‘ Guardiola said to the media when asked if Gundogan will extend his contract with Man City. ‘We need Gundo, Bernardo, we will need players. ‘Â
Gundogan Struggles to Rediscover Best Form at City
After winning every with Man City during the 2022-23 season, the versatile midfielder opted to look for a new adventure and join Barcelona. However, because of his struggle at the Catalan outfit and their financial situation, Gundogan returned to Etihad last summer.
There were plenty of expectations earlier this season that the 34-year-old could still recapture his best form with Man City. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case as his has struggled to help City compete for the league titles and UCL.
Guardiola’s side have been disappointing this season for their high standard both in the EPL and Europe. Man City are out of the league title race and saw itself eliminated from UCL’s playoffs by Real Madrid.
Nevertheless, it seems like Guardiola remains confident in Gundogan’s ability and is ready to keep the midfielder for at least another season.
