Australian captain Mitchell Marsh has revealed that he wanted to play for Zimbabwe ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series, which is set to begin on Monday, September 15. The all-rounder spent three years of his childhood in Harare while his father, Geoff Marsh, coached the Zimbabwe national team.
Mitchell Marsh will lead Australia during the ODI series against Zimbabwe in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins. The tour is also an important opportunity for Australia to gain experience in southern African conditions ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, with three more ODIs and three Tests in South Africa.
Mitchell Marsh Reunites With Childhood Friend Farai Mapondera
Mitchell Marsh shared an emotional reunion with Farai ‘Happy’ Mapondera at the Harare Sports Club on Monday. Mapondera worked at the Marsh family home during their time in Zimbabwe, and the two had not seen each other for almost 25 years.
Mitchell Marsh spotted Mapondera underneath the team’s viewing area and shared a long embrace with him. Mapondera had tried to meet him two days earlier but missed him while the Australian captain was training at a nearby gym.
Marsh later brought Mapondera upstairs for a video call with his father Geoff, sister Melissa and mother Michelle. Mapondera joked that Geoff had less hair than during his coaching stint in Zimbabwe. Marsh said the reunion was emotional for everyone.
“I spent my days with him a lot of the time,” Marsh told cricket.com.au. “I refused to eat in the house – I’d go and have dinner with him. He was a big part of my childhood.”
Mitchell Marsh Recalls Cricketing Bond With Curran Family
Marsh also has strong cricketing memories from his childhood in Zimbabwe, particularly his time with the Curran family. He spent hours playing cricket at the Harare Sports Club with Tom, Sam and Ben Curran, the sons of his father’s coaching assistant, Kevin Curran.
Tom and Sam later represented England, while Ben is now part of Zimbabwe’s ODI squad. The Currans also lived with the Marsh family for a short period after leaving their farm in Rusape in 2004.
Kevin Curran played an important role in Zimbabwe’s first-ever World Cup win over Australia in 1983, scoring 27 and dismissing Allan Border. Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza later joked that Marsh was “practically a local”.
“I actually wanted to play for Zimbabwe at one point,” Marsh said.
Mitchell Marsh Made International Breakthrough in Harare
Marsh made an important breakthrough during Australia’s 2014 ODI series in Harare. Then-captain George Bailey promoted him to No. 3, and he responded with 89 against Zimbabwe before scoring an unbeaten 86 with seven sixes in the next match.
Those performances helped him push for a place in Australia’s squad for the 2015 ODI World Cup.
“I had the opportunity to bat three in a couple of those games, which was amazing,” Marsh said. “To be honest, it feels so long ago that it’s hard to really even remember the tour. But I do know that obviously I had a couple of really good innings as a young kid, and that was a great squad to be a part of.”
More than a decade later, Marsh is back in Harare as Australia’s captain. He will lead the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, with the opening ODI also marking his 100th appearance in the format.
He also wants to help Australia’s younger players, including Cooper Connolly, Joel Davies and Ollie Peake, make the most of their international opportunities.
“I think a lot of us feel that responsibility to make sure these guys really enjoy playing cricket for Australia,” Marsh said. “It goes so fast. For me to now think that I’m a senior player within this group – I just want to create the best environment for them to learn, to hopefully excel, to experience playing international cricket. We are so lucky to do what we do, to get to come to places like this, tour and be together. I hope they have a great time and a similar time to what I had.”
