India at Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 8: Lovepreet’s silver, Seema’s bronze sparks pride; Neeraj books final spot
India celebrates Day 8 success as Lovepreet wins silver, Seema takes bronze, and Neeraj reaches the final.

India enjoyed another eventful day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday, collecting a silver and a bronze medal while several athletes advanced to finals across athletics and bowls, and others concluded their campaigns.Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh narrowly missed out on gold in the men’s +110kg category before settling for silver, while Seema Kaliramna battled through a difficult women’s discus throw final to secure bronze. Elsewhere, Tejaswin Shankar ended the opening day of the decathlon in medal contention, all three Indian javelin throwers progressed to the final, and both of the country’s triple jump representatives also booked their places in the medal round.By the end of Day 8, India’s overall medal tally stood at 17 medals (3 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze).

Lovepreet adds another weightlifting medal before Martina finishes fifth

India’s day began on the weightlifting platform with Lovepreet Singh producing one of the best performances of his career in the men’s +110kg final.Lovepreet lifted 176kg in the snatch, setting a new Indian national record, before following it with another national record of 212kg in the clean and jerk. His combined total of 388kg earned him the silver medal, finishing just 1kg behind New Zealand’s David Liti, who claimed gold. The result also capped India’s weightlifting campaign with an eighth medal from the sport at the Glasgow Games.Later in the women’s +86kg competition, Martina Devi Maibam narrowly missed out on a podium finish. She registered a combined lift of 245kg to finish fifth.

Seema claims bronze as Nidhi narrowly misses out

India added another medal in athletics through Seema Kaliramna in the women’s discus throw final. Her competition began with a foul before she recovered with a throw of 57.32m in the second round.Seema then produced the decisive effort of her evening with 58.65m on her third attempt. Although she fouled on each of her remaining three throws, that mark proved enough to secure the bronze medal.Jamaica’s Samantha Hall won gold with 61.66m, while Canada’s Julia Tunks took silver with 60.67m.India came close to celebrating a second medal in the event as Nidhi Rani steadily improved during the competition before recording a best effort of 57.10m. She ultimately finished fourth, narrowly missing the podium.

Tejaswin Shankar remains firmly in medal contention

India’s strongest unfinished event came in the men’s decathlon. After completing the opening day’s five disciplines — the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m — Tejaswin Shankar ended the day in second place with 4,339 points. He trails Olympic champion Damian Warner by only 14 points, leaving the medal race wide open ahead of Friday’s concluding five events.

India’s javelin trio safely reaches the final

There was encouraging news in the men’s javelin qualification, where all three Indian athletes progressed.Neeraj Chopra qualified comfortably after producing a best throw of 79.61m, finishing fifth overall in qualifying.Rohit Yadav also advanced with 78.37m, placing ninth, while Yash Vir Singh completed India’s clean sweep after qualifying in tenth with a throw of 78.36m.The trio will now compete together in the final.

Double success in men’s triple jump qualifying

India also enjoyed a successful session in the men’s triple jump qualifiers.Praveen Chithravel finished second overall to comfortably book his place in the final, while Selva Prabhu Thirumaran also advanced after finishing third in qualifying. Both athletes remain in contention for medals later in the competition.

Mixed fortunes on the athletics track and in the field

Not all of India’s athletics results produced progression. In the men’s shot put final, Tajinderpal Singh Toor finished fifth, while Samardeep Singh Gill placed sixth. On the track, Vishal TK failed to qualify for the men’s 400m final, while Animesh Kujur also missed out on a place in the men’s 200m final.Parul completed the women’s 5,000m final in 13th place. The race was won by Australia’s Rose Davies, who completed a distance double after adding the 5,000m title to the 10,000m gold she had won earlier in the Games. Fellow Australian Jessica Hull finished second, while Scotland’s Megan Keith claimed the bronze medal.

    Cycling campaign produces no finals

India endured a difficult day in cycling. In para-cycling, Lisha Das was unable to qualify for the women’s C4-C5 4,000m individual pursuit final. On the velodrome, Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam, David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Rojit Singh Yanglem combined to finish seventh in the men’s team sprint.

One win and one defeat in bowls

India experienced mixed fortunes in bowls. The men’s pairs team of Dinesh Kumar and Navneet Singh edged Botswana in a sectional play match after a tiebreak to strengthen their campaign. The duo will face Ian Barnes and Oliver Thompson of the Falkland Islands in their Round 4 Sectional Play match at 5:15 PM IST on Friday, July 31.In the women’s singles competition, however, Nayanmoni Saikia was beaten by Malaysia’s Emma Firyana Saroji.

Positive day sets up busy finish to the Games

Although only two medals were added to the tally on Thursday, India finished the day with several encouraging storylines.Lovepreet Singh and Seema Kaliramna delivered podium finishes, Tejaswin Shankar remained in a strong position heading into the final day of the decathlon, all three Indian javelin throwers advanced, and both triple jump athletes secured places in the final. With multiple medal opportunities still to come, India closes Day 8 with 17 medals and plenty left to compete for during the final days of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
