Former Asian Games champion Swapna Barman has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after testing positive for a banned substance. The 29-year-old athlete tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic-androgenic steroid, according to NADA’s latest list of provisionally suspended athletes.Barman made history at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games by becoming the first Indian heptathlete to win gold in the event. She also won the Asian Championships and represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The heptathlete had announced her retirement earlier this month, saying her body, affected by several injuries, could no longer cope with the demands of competitive sport. The provisional suspension comes shortly after her retirement, bringing fresh attention to the final phase of a career in which Barman established herself as one of India’s leading multi-event athletes.
