Legendary director James Cameron has opened up about his plans to gain New Zealand citizenship to escape US President Donald Trump’s second term in office.

Cameron, who is a citizen of Canada, has been living in New Zealand for close to two decades but is yet to gain citizenship.

In an interview on The F#$%ing News with Paddy Gower podcast, Cameron said that he sees Trump’s reelection as “horrific” and “horrifying”.

“America doesn’t stand for anything if it doesn’t stand for what it has historically stood for,” the Titanic director explained.

“It becomes a hollow idea, and I think they’re hollowing it out as fast as they can for their own benefit.

“I see a turn away from everything decent.”

He compared having to see the effects of Trump’s second presidency play out to witnessing a “car crash over and over”.

Cameron shared that his New Zealand citizenship is imminent, saying that it “means a lot” to him.

“It’s something I’ve worked toward, something I’ve had to sacrifice for,” he said.

“If you’re going to uproot your family and move somewhere, you have to invest, you have to be part of it, you have to earn standing. I just think you’ve got to earn your right to be in a place.”

Despite his efforts to be as far away from Trump’s power as he can get, the Avatar director said that there is no way to fully escape the global impacts of his second term.

“We are all in this together globally,” he said.

“I don’t know if I feel any safer here, but I certainly feel like I don’t have to read about it on the front page every single day. And it’s just sickening,” he continued.

“There’s something nice about the New Zealand outlets – at least they’ll put it on page three,’ he added.

“I just don’t want to see that guy’s face any more on the front page of the paper. It’s inescapable there.”
