What are Champions League squad rules?

UEFA’s Champions League squad rules can be split into two lists: List A and List B, with the former subject to a strict deadline before the league phase gets under way.

    List A

List A is the main Champions League squad and was subject to the Wednesday evening deadline. Clubs can register a maximum of 25 players.

At least eight must be ‘locally trained’ with no more than four classed as ‘association-trained’ rather than ‘club-trained’. If a club does not have eight locally trained players, its squad limit is reduced proportionally – six locally trained players, for example, means a maximum of 23 players.

Clubs must also have at least two goalkeepers on List A, with a minimum of three goalkeepers across Lists A and B combined.

    List B

List B is designed for younger players and has no limit on the number of players who can be registered. There is also no fixed squad deadline, with players able to be added up to 23:59 CET on the day before a match.

A player can qualify for List B if they:

    • Were born on or after January 1, 2005
    • Have been eligible for the club for two consecutive years since turning 15
    • Or have been eligible for the club for three consecutive years, including a loan spell within the same association, since turning 15

Players aged 16 can also qualify if they have been registered with the club continuously for the previous two years. Players who change clubs after featuring in UEFA qualifying rounds or play-offs can represent their new club from the league phase onwards.

When does the league phase start?

The league phase of the Champions League starts on September 8, 2026 and ends on January 27, 2027.
