When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, announced the national squads for the upcoming T20I tours of Ireland and England, alongside the Asian Games campaign, cricket enthusiasts expected a rewards-based lineup. However, the roster left the cricketing fraternity in disbelief. The most glaring omission from the transition-era squad was Rajat Patidar.

Despite an unprecedented domestic run and masterminding a historical turnaround for his franchise, Patidar’s name was completely missing from the 15-member roster. The snub has ignited a fierce debate online regarding selection transparency, prompting a remarkably direct, data-heavy reaction from his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.

RCB hints at disappointment as Rajat Patidar is overlooked for India’s T20I team

Just weeks before the national selection meeting, Patidar etched his name into absolute folklore. He became only the third captain in tournament history to secure back-to-back IPL championships, joining the exclusive tier of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Steering the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to consecutive trophies, Patidar led by example throughout the 2026 season. Operating in the notoriously difficult middle-order, he amassed 501 runs across 15 matches, carrying a blistering average of 41.75 and an astronomical strike rate of 192.69, anchored by five crucial half-centuries.

Recognizing the silence from the national selectors, RCB took to social media to post a pointed rebuttal. Rather than using aggressive rhetoric, the franchise let an overwhelming wave of statistical evidence do the talking. They highlighted Patidar’s unmatched middle-order dominance since 2024, emphasizing his aggregate of 1,208 runs across 41 innings with 12 half-centuries.

The franchise underscored three metrics that appeared tailored to expose the selection blindspot:

    • 89 Sixes: The highest maximum count by any Indian non-opener in the designated two-year window.
    • 172.57 Strike Rate: The fastest scoring rate by any Indian non-opening batter with a minimum baseline of 500 runs.
    • 74.25% Boundary Ratio: The highest boundary percentage recorded by any Indian middle-order batter during the latest IPL edition.

The tactical breakdown by the franchise was widely interpreted by fans and experts as a subtle, yet firm, public swipe at Ajit Agarkar’s committee for ignoring structural role-excellence.

The tactical outcry eventually forced the selection committee to address the elephant in the room. During the post-selection press conference, chief selector Agarkar was asked directly whether Patidar’s name, back-to-back leadership credentials, and elite strike rates were thoroughly evaluated before finalizing the squad.

Agarkar downplayed any individual bias, pointing to the immense depth of India’s talent pool as the primary cause for hard exclusions. “We discussed a host of players. We think these 15 are deserving,” Agarkar explained. He noted that while plenty of players are fundamentally good enough to walk into the national side, the committee prioritized continuity and specific role alignments.

“There will always be players missing out, but we’ve picked a good squad, and we are happy with this one,” he concluded.

With India opting for Shreyas Iyer to lead the transition unit and blooding ultra-high-tempo prospects like teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Patidar remains out in the cold. Nevertheless, RCB’s public defense ensures that the debate surrounding their captain’s exclusion will remain a major talking point as the national team departs for the United Kingdom.
