    Harry Maguire’s 84th-minute header gave Manchester United their first victory at Liverpool for almost 10 years and consecutive wins under manager Ruben Amorim for the first time as the reigning champions suffered a third successive Premier League defeat.

    Bruno Fernandes, who had hit the outside of a post from a presentable opportunity to make the scoreline 2-0 during the first half, volleyed a cross to the far post for Maguire to score his first United goal against the Reds, who have now lost four in a row in all competitions.

    Cody Gakpo recovered from hitting posts on three occasions to slot the hosts level with 12 minutes remaining, replying to Bryan Mbeumo’s opener after 63 seconds – the fastest goal in the fixture since Nicky Butt’s for United at Old Trafford in October 1995.

    Liverpool are four points behind leaders Arsenal and visit Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday, three days before United, who are two points behind them in ninth, return to action at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in the league.

    United’s search for a first away win of the season had included a humiliating EFL Cup exit at fourth-tier Grimsby Town in which Mbeumo missed a penalty, so it was perhaps fitting that the £71 million signing clinically put them ahead for the first time in this long-awaited, unexpected triumph.
