Cody Gakpo recovered from hitting posts on three occasions to slot the hosts level with 12 minutes remaining, replying to Bryan Mbeumo’s opener after 63 seconds – the fastest goal in the fixture since Nicky Butt’s for United at Old Trafford in October 1995.

United’s search for a first away win of the season had included a humiliating EFL Cup exit at fourth-tier Grimsby Town in which Mbeumo missed a penalty, so it was perhaps fitting that the £71 million signing clinically put them ahead for the first time in this long-awaited, unexpected triumph.
The striker’s first goal since August 30 was a timely one that was contested by Liverpool manager Arne Slot because Alexis Mac Allister suffered a head injury in the build-up, with the goal allowed because referee Michael Oliver had been unaware of the midfielder’s predicament.
Gakpo’s series of attempts against the posts – two before half-time, one shortly after the restart – might have given Liverpool a sense of fatalism, with one of those attempts taking a touch off Bruno Fernandes on its way towards goal.
That anguish turned to relief when Gakpo was afforded space by Luke Shaw to find the far corner of the net after the out-of-form Mohamed Salah had fired wide from close range, but Maguire decided a dizzying showdown with United’s first winner at Anfield since Wayne Rooney’s late goal under Louis van Gaal in January 2016.
