Rohit Sharma, on Wednesday (May 21), dropped an easy catch to give Vipraj Nigam a huge reprieve during the match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium.

Set a target of 181 runs, Delhi Capitals were off to a shaky start. They lost three wickets for just 27 runs inside 5 overs. Deepak Chahar gave Mumbai the first breakthrough by dismissing Delhi’s stand-in captain Faf du Plessis in the second over. The right-handed batsman departed after scoring 6 runs off 7 balls.

In the third over, Trent Boult dismissed the in-form KL Rahul for 11 runs to put Mumbai Indians in a commanding position. Later in the fifth over, Will Jacks joined the party too and dismissed Abishek Porel to reduce Delhi Capitals to 27/3.

After the loss of three early wickets, Delhi Capitals promoted Vipraj Nigam in the batting order, and the allrounder made his intentions very clear right from the start. In the fifth over itself, he hit Jacks for a six and two fours.

In the earlier games this season, Vipraj showed that he is more than capable of inflicting big damage on the opposition with the bat. With the right-handed batsman starting his innings in such commanding fashion, Mumbai Indians would have liked to dismiss him as early as possible.

And it did not take long for the Mumbai Indians to get the opportunity. In the sixth over, they would have dismissed Vipraj, but Rohit Sharma made a mess of an easy catch. On the final ball of the over bowled by Mitchell Santner, Vipraj made room for himself and wanted to hit the ball on the off side.

However, he could only slice it towards Rohit Sharma, who was standing at short third man. It was an easy catch, but Rohit Sharma failed to hold on to it and gave Vipraj a crucial reprieve.

Fortunately for Rohit, the dropped catch did not prove costly as Santner dismissed Vipraj in the 8th over. Vipraj could not score any runs after being dropped and eventually departed for 20 runs off 11 balls. At the time of writing this report, Delhi Capitals were on 55/4 after 8 overs.

Earlier in the game, Mumbai Indians recovered from 58/3 to post a competitive total of 180/5. Suryakumar Yadav starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 73 off 43 balls.
