India are set to begin a new World Test Championship campaign when they take on Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series in Galle from August 15. With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable for the tour, captain Shubman Gill faces an important selection call in the bowling department, while the visitors will also look to start the new WTC cycle on a winning note.
The series presents Gill with another opportunity to establish himself as a Test captain and guide a team that is gradually undergoing a transition. Ahead of the opening Test, the India skipper spoke about the competition for places, the development of young players and the team’s broader ambitions.
Shubman Gill explains India’s bowling dilemma
One of the major talking points ahead of the Galle Test is who will partner India’s established bowlers in the absence of Bumrah. Gill admitted that the team has a difficult decision to make between Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna. Gill highlighted Brar’s ability to make an impact with the older ball, particularly because of the bounce and pace he can generate. At the same time, Krishna has impressed recently and strengthened his case with an encouraging display in the warm-up game.
“Gurnoor Brar is excellent with the old ball as he can extract bounce at a good pace. But Prasidh Krishna is bowling well of late as we have seen in the warm-up match. So it’s a tough call,” Gill said, as quoted by NDTV Sports.
The captain also stressed that Bumrah’s absence should not be viewed simply as a setback. Instead, he believes it gives another member of the squad the chance to take responsibility and make a difference.
“Jasprit Bumrah is not here but it’s an opportunity for someone to step up,” Gill added.

Gill asks for patience with India’s young players
Gill also spoke about the importance of allowing players to develop naturally rather than expecting immediate consistency from them. With several younger players competing for regular opportunities, the captain believes patience will be crucial. According to Gill, players grow at different speeds and some need additional time before they become completely comfortable at the highest level. His comments indicate that India are prepared to invest in the development of their emerging talent rather than make quick judgments.
The captain also admitted that he now feels more settled in his leadership role. After gaining experience at the helm, Gill appears increasingly comfortable with the responsibilities that come with leading India in the longest format.
Expectations high from Team India under Gill
India will enter the Sri Lanka series with a clear objective: build a strong foundation for another push towards the WTC Final. Gill revealed that the team believes it needs to win around six or seven Tests during the cycle to remain firmly in contention.
“Our goal is to stay in contention for a berth in World Test Championship final. We need to win six or seven Tests for that. So we want to make a beginning here,” Gill said.
The opening Test in Galle, therefore, carries significance beyond the immediate result. India will be eager to begin the new WTC cycle positively, while Gill will hope his team can adapt quickly to Sri Lankan conditions.
