
Why The Excitement Around AI Learning Is Justified
Everyone’s racing to “enable AI.” But in the rush to move fast, are we actually helping people learn, or just helping them feel like they have? Five years ago, if someone had asked me to explain Machine Learning, I would have confidently opened three browser tabs, speed-read them, and still quietly hoped no one asked a follow-up question. Today, I can not only understand the basics but also hold my own in real conversations about embedding AI into learning experiences. Without defaulting to “personalization engine” every five minutes. That shift matters to me. A lot. AI has made complex ideas more accessible, more democratic, and far less intimidating for people across roles: L&D professionals, facilitators, business leaders. And I love that. But alongside that excitement, I’ve been noticing something else. A rush. And not always a thoughtful one.
The AI Learning Gold Rush Is Real—And It’s Moving Fast
McKinsey & Company reports that AI adoption has more than doubled in recent years. LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report highlights AI literacy as one of the most in-demand skill areas globally. And you can feel it on the ground: every second learning deck has an “AI-enabled” slide, every tool is suddenly “AI-powered,” and every team is being nudged to “learn AI, fast.” It’s exciting. It’s necessary. It’s also a little chaotic.
When “Learning AI” Becomes A Checkbox
Here’s where I want us to pause. Not stop, just pause. Because somewhere in the scramble to “enable everyone on AI,” the learning itself risks becoming a one-hour webinar everyone attends but few apply, a tool demo dressed up as skill-building, or a shiny feature added without a real use case. I’ve seen this pattern before, just with different buzzwords. The intention is right. The execution is rushed. And when that happens, we’re not really building capability. We’re building familiarity with the feeling of learning. Familiarity is not the same as capability. And exposure is not the same as application.
What Actually Helped Me Learn AI
What worked for me wasn’t speed. It was context. Understanding where AI actually fits into my work. Experimenting in small, low-pressure ways. Seeing real examples instead of abstract frameworks. Nobody handed me a “complete AI learning path” and expected me to follow it linearly. It was messy, iterative, and honestly, far more effective for it. Which is exactly why I worry when learning is designed the other way around: tool first, context later.
The Distinction That Actually Matters
The World Economic Forum puts it well: the real challenge isn’t introducing AI concepts at scale, it’s reskilling people meaningfully at scale. That word, meaningfully, is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Awareness is not capability. Exposure is not application. Access is not adoption. These aren’t just semantic differences. They’re the gap between a team that says “we did AI training” and a team that has actually changed how they work.
So What Should We Do Instead?
Not slow down. Not shy away from AI. Definitely not. But maybe reframe the question we start with. Start with problems, not tools. Before introducing any AI capability, ask: what are we actually trying to solve? The tool is the answer, not the starting point. Design for relevance. A customer support executive and a learning designer don’t need the same AI training. One size rarely fits anyone well. Keep it human. Ironically, the more human the learning experience feels, the more likely AI adoption actually sticks. People don’t change how they work because of a compelling demo. They change because it made sense for them. And finally, make space for experimentation. Learning AI shouldn’t feel like passing an exam. It should feel like trying something, failing a bit, and trying again, with enough psychological safety to do so.
Where I’ve Landed
I’m still very much pro-AI learning. If anything, more so than ever. Because I’ve seen what happens when it’s done well, when someone goes from “I think Machine Learning is… something with data?” to “Here’s how we could actually use this in our learning strategy.” Not perfectly. But genuinely. And that’s the point. We don’t need everyone to become AI experts overnight. We just need them to become thoughtful, confident users of it.
The AI learning gold rush isn’t a bad thing. It means people care. It means we’re moving forward. But if we’re not careful, we might end up with a lot of activity and not enough actual skill. So maybe the question isn’t “How fast can we scale AI learning?” It’s “How well are we helping people actually use it?”
