The Detroit Red Wings upped their offer to Simon Edvinsson to around $8.5 million, but it’s not enough
Daily Faceoff: Jeff Marek and David Pagnotta discuss Detroit Red Wings and Simon Edvinsson. The Red Wings have moved a bit and they still want to sign him, but they are still a part on money.
Marek: “So Dave, when we talked last Wednesday about Simon Edvinson and the acrimony between the two sides, and how, you know what, we’re not sure whether it’s completely at the we’re shutting the door and we’re never going back. It sort of is inching closer, coming off Elliotte’s report on Saturday as well, the preference of a trade.
And whenever I hear that, I say to myself, the door is still open a little bit. When it’s your, and the, the reason I bring it up, it’s off the top of the show. I, and, you’ll remember this back in 2009, Mike Gillis payments flew to Sweden on July 1 to bring Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who just happened to also be represented by J.P. Barry, convince them to re-sign with the Vancouver Canucks and come back into the mix and come back into the fold.

It doesn’t feel like the door is permanently shut here, but it is really close. The other thing I do believe is that, you know, further to what we talked about on Wednesday, Detroit knew about this before he went back to Sweden. This wasn’t like he got back into Sweden and then it was like, yeah, you know what, I’m peacing out.
Pagnotta: “Right. No, it wasn’t, and frustration started to boil over when they weren’t getting closer and closer to a deal. As we got closer and closer to the start of the regular season. Training camp ends. Nothing happens. He’s going, ‘What did I do all this for? I thought we were going to figure this out. That was the whole point of me staying in camp and being ready for the season.’ Which is on Friday, which was last Friday for Detroit.
There’s still a runway to figure something out, so for him to go back when he did, back to Sweden, was a pretty good indicator that they were not close at all on a deal.
And my understanding was that Detroit recently offered a six-year deal in and around the 8.5 (Moritz) Seider money, and obviously that’s not going to get it done. He’s, he’s looking for significantly more dollars on, if we’re going six or seven years. But there was a bit of a bend, from what I was told, with respect to their position of the, excuse me, the team’s position of bridge deal. Where they went to six years at just over, o,r or I should say, in and around, I don’t know the definitive number, but in and around 8.5 million. And and Mo Seider’s at 8.55.”
… (mic issues)
“The Wings and, and Edvinsson need a little more work on, on this to make it happen. But you’re right. I don’t think that, I agree with you, I don’t think the door is completely closed either, despite the fact that he is frustrated. And, and there have been other terms that have been described to me that we can use, but let’s go with the nice frustrated one.
But you know, this is again, he’s, he’s upset with how this situation kind of unfolded. And you know, even with Detroit saying, ‘Okay, we’ll give you six years at 8.5 or around that.’ It wasn’t going to get that done. That, that wasn’t going to get things done either. You know, a lot of the talk is if he’s going full term at seven years, you’re looking at around 11 million, or in that ballpark, especially with some of the numbers that have been tossed out.
Simon Edvinsson and Dylan Larkin Trades Could Reshape the Detroit Red Wings
So for that to go to, you know, for him to drop to 8.5, I just don’t, don’t see it being in the cards. Maybe, if anything, you look at it as progress from Detroit’s willingness to get off of their initial stance. But dollar-wise, I just, I just don’t see it being a fit.
And there are other teams that have been poking around, and I’m very curious about Seattle. Very curious about Philadelphia, and a few others. But the messaging still seems to be at least from Detroit for now, anyway, or at least going into the week and over the weekend was we’re still going to sign this kid. So you know, maybe we’ll have this conversation later, but we’re not overly interested in exploring a trade.”
