Former India pacer Varun Aaron has announced his preferred playing XI for the opening Test against the West Indies which begins on Thursday October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With the home series marking Shubman Gill’s first assignment as India’s full-time Test captain on home soil Aaron’s selection highlighted India’s long-term strategy while relying on proven strengths in spin-friendly conditions.

Varun Aaron selects his India XI for the series opener against West Indies

The squad for the series had been revealed midway through India’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign in the UAE with notable absentees such as Karun Nair, Rishabh Pant and Abhimanyu Easwaran missing out. In contrast Devdutt Padikkal and Axar Patel returned to the red-ball setup offering selectors additional options. However, Aaron’s XI did not include Axar with the all-rounder left out in favour of a three-pronged spin attack.

The top order names remain unchanged from the tour of England with Yashasvi Jaiswal partnering KL Rahul at the top followed by Sai Sudharsan and captain Gill at number four. Aaron endorsed stability in India’s batting lineup while suggesting that Padikkal and wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel should reinforce the middle order. This combination balances experience with opportunities for youngsters as India eyes a strong start to the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Aaron’s bowling blueprint leaned heavily towards tailoring plans for subcontinent conditions. He picked vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja alongside Washington Sundar and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav as the three spinners. Kuldeep who missed the entire England tour is viewed as a serious contender in home Tests where wrist spin can make a crucial impact. To spearhead the pace attack Aaron included Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj both proven performers in Indian conditions.

Aaron on India’s tactics and turning tracks

Assessing conditions and strategies Aaron stressed that India would not drift away from their preferred formula of preparing spin-friendly pitches at home despite last year’s shock series defeat to New Zealand. India’s 0-3 loss in 2024 had ended a long undefeated streak at home yet Aaron believes that one setback is unlikely to alter the team’s philosophy.

“India have been annihilating foreign teams for years with turning surfaces. Just because they lose one series that does not mean they are going to change. I think India will continue to prepare tracks that assist spinners though not excessively rank turners,” Aaron explained while sharing his views on ESPN Cricinfo.

His comments also highlighted the contrasting challenge posed by the West Indies compared to New Zealand. While the Blackcaps fielded a more disciplined and refined spin attack the Caribbean side’s bowling resources are more pace-heavy which could tilt the series in India’s favor on dry Ahmedabad surfaces. Aaron noted that Gill’s young side despite missing senior figures like Pant still had enough quality and balance to outplay the visitors particularly with the home advantage expected to strongly assist spinners.

With India beginning a crucial World Test Championship cycle on the back of a hard-fought 2-2 series draw in England the emphasis will be on building consistency. For Gill this will be an opportunity to establish his captaincy credentials in front of Indian fans as he leads a side that mixes promising youngsters with world-class match-winners. The first Test promises to be an indicator of how India balances stability and experimentation as they seek early dominance in the WTC race.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja (vc), Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj
