The second ODI between England and South Africa at Lord’s was a high-stakes affair so far, filled with moments of intense drama and skill. However, amidst the boundary-hitting and key breakthroughs, a bizarre and almost comical incident unfolded that momentarily halted play and sent a wave of surprise through the crowd. A seemingly routine defensive stroke by a South African batter Tristan Stubbs suddenly turned into a moment of peril, as he lost complete control of his bat in a way that had everyone on the edge of their seats, fearing a bizarre and unfortunate dismissal.

Tristan Stubbs survives a close call as his bat almost falls on the stumps in ENG vs SA 2nd ODI

A strange and unusual moment of play occurred in the 30th over of South Africa’s innings when opener Stubbs found himself in a peculiar situation that nearly resulted in a self-inflicted dismissal. Facing a delivery from England fast bowler Saqib Mahmood, Stubbs attempted a routine defensive punch off the back foot. In a split second, a forceful bottom-hand grip caused him to lose control of his bat in a bizarre fashion.

The bat slipped from his hands, looping dramatically over his shoulder in a high arc before harmlessly falling into the crease directly behind him. In a moment of pure instinct, the batter dived after his bat to protect his stumps, frantically grabbing at the piece of willow as it landed precariously close to his timbers. The quick reflexes prevented what would have been an incredibly unlucky hit-wicket dismissal. The incident provided a fleeting moment of comic relief in an otherwise tense encounter, leaving both the commentators and the players in a state of amused disbelief.

South Africa’s formidable total of 330/8 was built on a series of crucial partnerships. The foundation was laid by an opening stand of 73 runs between Ryan Rickelton (35) and Aiden Markram (49), who looked poised for back-to-back half-centuries. However, the most pivotal alliance was the 147-run partnership between Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs.

Stubbs complemented Breetzke perfectly, reaching a composed 58 from 62 balls before he was run out due to a mix-up. The innings was given a final boost by Dewald Brevis, who atoned for the run-out with a blistering 42 off just 20 balls, an onslaught that included a trio of sixes. Corbin Bosch saw the innings through to its conclusion, finishing with an unbeaten 32 off 29 balls.

Meanwhile Breetzke made history, becoming the first-ever batter in one-day international history to pass 50 in his first five career innings. The young batter built on his prior impressive scores, 150 and 83 against Pakistan, followed by 57 and 88 against Australia, to craft a brilliant 85 off just 77 balls in this match. His innings was a showcase of power and timing, featuring seven fours and three sixes.

England’s bowlers had to work hard for their wickets, with Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid being the standout performers. Archer was the most successful bowler, claiming four wickets for 62 runs, including the key dismissals of Rickelton and Breetzke. Rashid, meanwhile, delivered a masterful and economical spell, finishing with figures of 2 for 33 from his 10 overs. He was responsible for dismissing both Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, who fell just one run short of a half-century. England’s part-time spinners, Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell, struggled to contain the flow of runs, but Bethell did manage to claim the wicket of Dewald Brevis to end his late assault. Facing a record chase at Lord’s, England will have to surpass their previous highest second-innings score to win the match and level the series.
