What will happen with Dylan Larkin in Detroit before training camp?
Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio Power Play segment during the Detroit Red Wings team preview and was asked where things stand with Dylan Larkin and his trade request.

Host: “I’m going to ask you one of our five burning questions, Helene. But Dylan Larkin obviously is the other storyline that’s been going on with the Detroit Red Wings. The trade request does still stand, and right now, as we speak, there’s no general manager to even make this move.
Can Dylan Larkin Remain With the Detroit Red Wings Next Season?
But like, can the Detroit Red Wings recover from trading Dylan Larkin? Obviously, the return is going to be pretty solid. Hopefully, they can get a first-line forward, back, maybe a pick, a prospect, so on and so forth. But will they be able to recover and become that playoff team without their captain, Dylan Larkin?”
Helene St. James: “Yeah, it’s a great question, and right now, I mean, he didn’t give them a lot of teams to where he wanted to go. It certainly wasn’t for lack of trying. Steve, you know, explored Florida, Minnesota, Vegas, and talked to Jim Nill, a longtime Wings employee in Dallas as well. Nobody was willing to give up what the Wings really need in return, which is, essentially, somebody like Dylan to come in and play center on their first line.
I mean, they’re not very deep at center, so that’s really what they need in return. But now, with a change in management coming in, and everything I hear: it’s going to be an analytics-driven guy. Does he decide to flip Dylan for futures instead? Prospects, picks, which set the rebuild back yet again, and tell fans and tell Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond they’re not going to make the playoffs next year or the season after, probably most likely.
These are all questions that it’s now near the middle of August. Most teams, leaders, most teams have their roster set. Everybody’s on vacation, and here the Wings are lingering, looking for new leadership, with a captain who has not rescinded his request to be traded.”
NHLRumors.com Note: As it has been documented on NHLRumors.com, the Detroit Red Wings want one, if not two, NHL-ready players back for Dylan Larkin. That was under Steve Yzerman. However, that stance has not changed, as the team does not want to continue the rebuild.
Larkin was frustrated, as he has not made the playoffs since his rookie season back in 2016. The relationship between Yzerman and Larkin was part of the reason for the trade request. So there will need to be mending of the fences for him to stay.

However, even when he put in the trade request, there were no guarantees of a trade given the list of teams Larkin presented to the Red Wings. If a trade is still to go down, three teams will need to be involved to satisfy all the parties. As of now, Larkin remains on the team, but that can change with one phone call.
