Senate committee pushes to cut $3 million in Harvard research grants over alleged 'far-left ideology' promotion
Senate committee calls for defunding $3 million in Harvard research amid ‘woke’ criticism

The Senate Commerce Committee is urging the defunding of over $3 million in National Science Foundation (NSF) research grants awarded to Harvard University, accusing some of the projects of promoting what it calls “far-left ideology.” The call for action follows an investigation led by the committee, which found that several Harvard research initiatives, funded through the NSF, were linked to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles that some senators argue foster a “neo-Marxist” agenda.
The controversy is part of a broader Republican push to limit funding for programs they argue are rooted in “woke” ideologies. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee, has been vocal in his criticism of what he describes as the misuse of federal grants to promote political agendas in academic research. This initiative is part of a wider investigation into over 3,400 NSF-funded projects, amounting to more than $2.05 billion, many of which the committee claims promote divisive policies.
    Grants under scrutiny
The committee’s report, released in February 2025, highlights 14 research projects at Harvard University that received funding from the NSF. These projects, totaling between $25,000 and just over $600,000, span disciplines including ecology, political science, physics, and computer science. Among the initiatives are a program focused on educational robotics kits, research into gender differences in digital learning, and an undergraduate summer environmental science program at Harvard Forest.
Critics of these grants argue that the funding supports research that emphasizes social justice issues, such as gender studies and diversity, at the expense of scientific neutrality. Senator Cruz has repeatedly accused DEI programs of “poisoning research efforts” and undermining confidence in the scientific community. “DEI initiatives have eroded confidence in the scientific community and fueled division among Americans,” Cruz said, as quoted by The Harvard Crimson.
    Harvard’s response and ongoing review
In light of the growing scrutiny, Harvard has initiated an internal review of its NSF grants. University officials, including Vice Provost for Research John H. Shaw, notified faculty in January 2025 that all NSF-funded projects would be assessed to ensure compliance with new federal guidelines. These guidelines, prompted by an executive order from the Trump administration, direct agencies to cease funding any projects promoting DEI principles.
Harvard researchers, whose work has been flagged, have expressed frustration with the investigation, arguing that their research is being misrepresented. Christina G. Warinner, an archaeologist whose NSF-funded project focuses on Classic Maya social kinship networks, questioned why her research was labeled as promoting “neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda.” She described the allegations as “utterly unclear,” as reported by The Harvard Crimson.
Despite the backlash, the Senate committee remains firm in its stance. The review of NSF grants is ongoing, with both the NSF and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) currently conducting audits to ensure compliance with the new directives.
