The IPL 2026 season turned into a complete disaster for the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians. Nothing worked for the five-time champions, and fans were left shocked as Mumbai Indians finished near the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table with only four wins in 14 matches.

From poor team selection, injury problems, and batting collapses to bowling failures, poor team combinations, and several confusing tactical decisions, everything went against the Mumbai Indians this season. The team never looked settled, and they have not shown any fighting spirit.

Captain Hardik Pandya has always been on the radar. Ever since he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain before IPL 2024, the all-rounder has been facing nonstop pressure from fans and cricket experts. After a poor 2024 season, MI somehow managed to reach the playoffs in IPL 2025, but IPL 2026 completely exposed the cracks inside the team.

Hardik himself had a tough season, scoring only 206 runs and picking up just four wickets, and even he missed five matches because of a back spasm. However, it was Hardik’s body language and the way he looked mentally exhausted and emotionally drained that exposed the hidden tension inside the MI camp.

Hardik Pandya set to leave Mumbai Indians

Hardik Pandya is reportedly set to leave the Mumbai Indians after a mentally exhausting season. It is being said that the Indian all-rounder has already conveyed his decision to the MI team management after they played their final league match of IPL 2026.

He was really hurt by the MI’s senior players, as they have not shown 100% commitment in his journey. It is being said that the last three years were so tough for Pandya, and senior players changed when he became the MI captain. The difference inside the camp made things worse for him.

A PTI report claimed, as quoted by a source, “Hardik was mentally stressed and completely exhausted. He had also sustained a back injury. In fact, once the play-off hopes were dashed, Hardik informed the decision-makers that he wouldn’t be staying back. Hardik had decided mid-season that he wouldn’t be part of MI next season. One thing is for sure. He is done with MI.”

According to reports, Hardik had already informed the Mumbai Indians management about his decision weeks before the tournament officially ended. This reportedly happened around the time MI was almost knocked out of the playoff race.

Even some reports suggested that both Hardik and the MI management agreed that parting ways could be the best option for everyone involved after the elimination from IPL 2026. They will officially announce the decision before the IPL 2027 mega auction.

Hardik Pandya’s successor at Mumbai Indians shouldn’t be Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, or Jasprit Bumrah

With Hardik likely to leave, Mumbai Indians will now have to find a new captain, and the biggest question is who he will be. The simplest option would be bringing Rohit Sharma back as skipper. Fans still love him, and many believe he deserved more respect after winning them five IPL titles.

But giving captaincy back to Rohit will only delay Mumbai’s rebuilding process. Rohit has already given his best years to both the Mumbai Indians and Team India. The franchise now needs a long-term solution instead of a temporary emotional decision.

Another option is Suryakumar Yadav, but he has been struggling badly for a long time now. He is already India’s T20I captain and struggling for consistency, so putting extra captaincy pressure on him could affect his natural attacking batting style, especially when there are fitness concerns as well.

Jasprit Bumrah sounds like the perfect option, given his captaincy experience, calmness, and intelligence, but making him captain could become risky because of his fitness workload.

Bumrah is India’s premier fast bowler across all formats. He already has a history of serious back injuries, and the BCCI also manages his workload carefully. So, giving Bumrah full-time captaincy responsibility will only increase pressure on both his body and the BCCI, which will not certainly allow this.

Tilak Varma should become the new Mumbai Indians captain

If Mumbai Indians truly want to start a fresh chapter, then Tilak Varma could be the smartest option. The young left-handed batter has quietly become one of the most important players in the MI setup over the last few years.

Since joining the franchise as a teenager, Tilak has shown maturity beyond his age. Being an MI product, the middle-order batter understands the Mumbai Indians culture, knows the expectations of the franchise, and has already handled difficult match situations many times.

Even during MI’s horrible IPL 2026 season, Tilak impressed with his batting, fearless attitude, composure, and ability to take responsibility when the team was collapsing around him.

Tilak also has a calm personality, which is very important for leadership. He understands the game beautifully; great temperament, ability to handle the pressure, and consistency make him the ideal player for MI’s captaincy. Apart from these factors, Tilak also has captaincy experience.

He already captained India A in the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where his smart captaincy and calm decisions during pressure situations impressed the selectors a lot. He has also led Hyderabad in domestic cricket and is now ready to captain India A on the upcoming Sri Lanka tour.

Tilak has a very good bond with the Mumbai Indians team management, coaches, and support staff. He is young, very talented, and can become the face of the franchise for the next decade. Mumbai now needs a fresh identity after tough times under Hardik’s captaincy.

So, this could be the perfect time for MI to trust a young leader and build a completely new team around Tilak instead of returning to old options. Giving captaincy to Tilak could be the beginning of a brand-new era for the Mumbai Indians after alleged division, distress, and failures under Pandya.
