Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw have a happy family of nine.

The director welcomed his first child, son Max, with then-wife Amy Irving in 1985. Capshaw and her first husband Robert had their daughter, Grey’s Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw, in 1976. Before her marriage to Spielberg, Kate adopted son Theo, who was born in 1988. After the couple tied the knot on Oct. 12, 1991, Spielberg also adopted Theo. Together, the couple went on to have four more children: Sasha, born in 1990; Sawyer, born in 1992; Mikaela, born in 1996; and Destry, born in 1996.

Initially, the Oscar winner could not see fatherhood fitting into his life — until he directed E.T. in 1982.

“It was not a kind of equation that made sense for me as I went from movie to movie to movie, script to script,” he told Variety at the film’s 40th anniversary celebration. “It never occurred to me till halfway through E.T.: I was a parent on that film. … I started thinking, ‘Well, maybe this could be my real life someday.’ It was the first time that it occurred to me that maybe I could be a dad.”

He added, “I have seven kids and six grandchildren, so E.T. worked for me very well.”
